Review: Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush #1) by Becca Fitzpatrick

Synopsis (via Goodreads):
For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her...until Patch comes along.

With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment, but after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is far more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.
My Thoughts:  I read some really negative reviews for this book a while back and it made me hesitant to give it a try, even though it was sitting on my bookcase staring at me and taunting me to just pick it up and see what the fuss was about.  I'm going to be honest here: I don't get all the negativity.  I really didn't think it was akin to Twilight (which I've read but never got all gooey over) and I don't understand the ... vitriol people seem to have for Patch.  No, he's not perfect boyfriend material and he definitely has a few personality quirks that might be off-putting but if someone starts out perfect what's the point in them trying to change?  And I think that an argument can be made that by the end of the book he had definitely changed.

Okay, now I might have a slight thing for bad boys.  I also might find fallen angels pretty darn sexy.  So, there're two points in this book's favor already.  Don't quote me on this, but I've also been known to read books just because the cover is pretty.  *cough*Torment*cough*  Hey, look!  This book is hitting all the high points already!

Let's face it, I really liked Patch.  A lot.  He's not a good guy in the beginning.  He has a plan and he's going to stick to it.  But he changed.  It wasn't something that happened overnight (as far as I can tell) and he seemed to fight against the disruption of his plan, but he did change.

Nora was ... not always making the best of choices as far as her physical safety was concerned.  Yeah, I can see that.  If you have some suspicion that someone is following you around, it's probably not the best idea to traipse down a long, lonely tunnel in the dark.  I'm just saying.  Yet, at the same time, I can see how someone would try to convince themselves that things like that didn't happen to people like them.  Especially when the things that are happening to her are so bizarre.

Overall, I liked the book.  I liked that you didn't know who to trust until the end.  I liked the sexual tension humming between Patch and Nora.  I liked that Patch had a bad side.

Heck, I just liked the book.

  1. I really need to start reading your reviews first. I was going through the same reviews your were evidently. Guess this is another one that I need to add to my TBR list.

  3. Yeah, I'm learning. Sometimes you have to hit me over the head with a brick, but I get it eventually. Since we seem to have almost the same taste (except for that zombie thing of course) I will forever more bow to your judgement 1st before being swayed by any other reviews. LOL!

  4. creativedeeds: The only reason you don't like zombie books (yet) is that you haven't read one that captures your imagination. We'll fix that, though. Oh, yes, we will. *mwahahahaha*
