Review: Dark Needs at Night's Edge (Immortals After Dark #5) by Kresley Cole

Synopsis (Goodreads):
A RAVEN-HAIRED TEMPTRESS OF THE DARK...
Néomi Laress, a famous ballerina from a past century, became a phantom the night she was murdered. Imbued with otherworldly powers but invisible to the living, she haunts her beloved home, scaring away trespassers -- until she encounters a ruthless immortal even more terrifying than Néomi herself.

A VAMPIRE WARRIOR CONSUMED BY MADNESS...
To prevent him from harming others, Conrad Wroth's brothers imprison him in an abandoned manor. But there, a female only he can see seems determined to drive him further into madness. The exquisite creature torments him with desire, leaving his body racked with lust and his soul torn as he finds himself coveting her for his own.

HOW FAR WILL HE GO TO CLAIM HER?
Yet even if Conrad can win Néomi, evil still surrounds her. Once he returns to the brutality of his past to protect her, will he succumb to the dark needs seething inside him?
My Thoughts:  What's the watchword with this series?  Oh, yeah!  FUN!  Vampire fun!  Ghostly fun!  Vengeful, bloody fun!  Sex-ay fun!  That's right.  I still maintain that this series is chock-full of the fun.  I'm standing by that come hell or high water.

So.  Do you guys remember all 9,000 times when I mentioned that damaged, broken heroes totally do it for me?  No?  Well, go back and read all my other reviews because I say it a lot.  And here I am, saying it again.  Conrad's a vampire who's been driven nearly mad by the memories of those he's drained.  He can hardly tell what's real and what's only in his head.  He's angry at his brother's for forcing him into this immortal life.  He wants to lash out at them and make them hurt as much as he does.  Since he's aiming to destroy them, his brothers, quite naturally, step in to try and bring him out of his bloodlust.

Enter Neomi, the ghost that only Conrad can see.  We all remember that Conrad is addled in the brainpan, don't we?  Even he can't tell at first if he's really seeing her or if she's just a lustful figment of his imagination.  Don't worry, though, eventually they get that all figured out.  Because, you know, she's not a figment.  She's a ghost.  And she really, really likes Conrad.  She wants to show him how two people who really, really like one another can express their liking in a physical sense.  Except that she's a ghost and she can't touch things in the real world.  Fortunately for them (and us), in the world of the Lore anything is possible.

When I first started this book I kept wondering how two people who couldn't even touch one another could make a dynamic couple.  Kresley Cole not only managed it, she did it damn well.  Those two sizzle.  They simmer.  They're downright combustible.  I love that before he meets Neomi Conrad is so determined to let himself descend into madness.  He doesn't care about the world anymore and he wants to be free of the pain.  Neomi, on the other hand, had her mortal life snatched from her and she still manages to grab onto life and experience it to the fullest.

They're two entirely different personailties who complement each other wonderfully.  Also, there's a hotness factor that I find undeniable.

Four books and one novella in and I'm still loving this world.  I'm excited to see what the rest of the series has in store for me.

  2. Oh yay, I'm so glad you're enjoying this series. It's seriously my all time favorite PNR series and probably one of my favorite all time series in general. I can tell you right now, that I've read up until book #11 (the latest one), and they never go bad. She is still rockin' it hardcore and I cannot WAIT for the next one! :)
