Review: Tempest Rising (Jane True #1) by Nicole Peeler

Synopsis (Goodreads):
Living in small town Rockabill, Maine, Jane True always knew she didn't quite fit in with so-called normal society. During her nightly, clandestine swim in the freezing winter ocean, a grisly find leads Jane to startling revelations about her heritage: she is only half-human.

Now, Jane must enter a world filled with supernatural creatures alternatively terrifying, beautiful, and deadly- all of which perfectly describe her new "friend," Ryu, a gorgeous and powerful vampire.

It is a world where nothing can be taken for granted: a dog can heal with a lick; spirits bag your groceries; and whatever you do, never-ever rub the genie's lamp.
My Thoughts:  Another winner in my string of fun books.  I really liked the world created here - with territories and high courts and the different factions of supernatural beings.  Jane is thrown into this world in a decidedly haphazard manner and she handles it well.  I adored the secondary characters and the court intrigue.  If Anyan doesn't have a nice, fat part in the later books I just might cry because that guy is ... well, he's a little bit fabulous.

While I really like Ryu as a character, I wasn't completely enamoured of him as Jane's love interest.  He feels more like a torrid affair than someone who would be happy showering Jane with love.  I can definitely see him putting his ambition ahead of Jane and that's not what I want for my main character.

Nicole Peeler did an excellent job bringing the town of Rockabill to life - the pettiness of some of the individuals, the ridiculous names of the diner, bar, etc.  Everything knit together nicely and as much as Jane professes to hate the town, it's her home and that shone through.

Fast paced and full of fun characters, I liked this dip into Jane's world.  I look forward to seeing how she grows as the series continues.

  4. I loved this book when I read it too. I remember the precise moment that it happened. It was when she quoted that Warren G song from the 90's. *sigh* Nicole Peeler rules.

  6. I didn't care for Ryu either although I really liked this book. The 2nd book is just as good and I'm eager to get my hands on the 3rd. Great review!
