Review: In Bed with a Highlander (Highlander #1) by Maya Banks

Synopsis (Goodreads):

Ewan McCabe, the eldest, is a warrior determined to vanquish his enemy. Now, with the time ripe for battle, his men are ready and Ewan is poised to take back what is his—until a blue-eyed, raven-haired temptress is thrust upon him. Mairin may be the salvation of Ewan’s clan, but for a man who dreams only of revenge, matters of the heart are strange territory to conquer.

Though the illegitimate daughter of the king, Mairin possesses prized property that has made her a pawn—and wary of love. Her worst fears are realized when she is rescued from peril, only to be forced into marriage by her charismatic and commanding savior, Ewan McCabe. But her attraction to her ruggedly powerful new husband finds her craving his surprisingly tender touch; her body comes alive under his sensual mastery. And as war draws near, Mairin’s strength, spirit, and passion challenge Ewan to conquer his demons—and embrace a love that means more than revenge and land.
My Thoughts: OH! FUN BOOK!  There's kissing and treachery and plotting and bad guys and the good guys aren't looking to fall in love but it smacks them up alongside the head anyway and it's fun fun fun fun fun.  *whew*  While Highlanders are admittedly high on my list of men I like to read about, I think Maya Banks did a brilliant job bringing them to life.  All of them.  From our hero to his brothers to the poor guys left with babysitting duty.  They all shone.  They all had that certain something that made me cheer for them.

I absolutely adored Mairin.  She insults Ewan's sweet loving.  She instructs him on how to kiss even though she has no practical knowledge.  She loves his son like he's her own.  She has spark and a core of vulnerability that made you tear up with her when her attempts at helping Ewan around the keep go awry.  Speaking of Ewan, I loved how he learned to laugh and completely ignored her kissing advice.  I appreciated how dedicated he was to both his son and his clan.  I liked watching the fire build between the two of them until they couldn't contain it anymore.

Guys, I said it before and I'll say it again - this book is fun.  Mairin has an interesting way of looking at life and watching her blossom into the mistress of the keep (despite her missteps) was well worth watching.  I'm chomping at the bit to see how Alaric and Caelen get their ladies now.
