Review: If I Die (Soul Screamers #5) by Rachel Vincent

Synopsis (Goodreads):
The entire school's talking about the gorgeous new math teacher, Mr. Beck. Everyone except Kaylee Cavanaugh. After all, Kaylee's no ordinary high-school junior. She's a banshee—she screams when someone dies.

But the next scream might be for Kaylee.

Yeah—it's a shock to her, too. So to distract herself, Kaylee's going to save every girl in school. Because that hot new teacher is really an incubus who feeds on the desire of unsuspecting students. The only girls immune to his lure are Kaylee and Sabine, her boyfriend's needy ex-girlfriend. Now the unlikely allies have to get rid of Mr. Beck…before he discovers they aren't quite human, either.

But Kaylee's borrowed lifeline is nearing its end. And those who care about her will do anything to save her life.

Anything.
My Thoughts: When I read books I like to imagine a writer's thought process as they set out to tell the story.  I'm fairly certain that Rachel Vincent had a giant white board in front of her as she was brainstorming and by the time she was done plotting the notes looked something like this:
RIP readers hearts out!  Send them REELING with all the twists and turns!  SLAY! KILL! MAIM! MAKE THEM HURT! Sit back and enjoy the carnage.
Yes, Rachel Vincent really is a diabolical genius sitting in her fortress of solitude, laughing gleefully as her readers flail and wail below her.  You read it on the internet.  It must be true.

Lest you think I didn't like this book... I FREAKING LOVED IT!  Several things that had been hinted at in previous books come to a head.  Other things that had been building slowly exploded in a glorious display of light and sound!  It was magical.  And heartbreaking.  Yes, I might have teared up once or twice.  Kaylee is put in a horrible situation and she deals with it as best she can.  Her family fights for her but the odds don't look good.  Her friends rally around her but the clock continues to tick on her borrowed time.

Without going into too much detail (I WILL NOT SPOIL YOU, I SWEAR!), this is the next book you want to read.  Provided, of course, you've already read the other 4.  If you haven't, why are you reading this review?  Just drop everything and go to whatever bookstore lights your candle and pick it up! You won't be sorry.

Three words to close out this review... I [heart] Tod.
