Review: The Iron Knight (Iron Fey #4) by Julie Kagawa

Release date: October 25, 2011
Synopsis (Goodreads):
My name—my True Name—is Ashallayn'darkmyr Tallyn.

I am the last remaining son of Mab, Queen of the Unseelie Court. And I am dead to her.

My fall began, as many stories do, with a girl…
My Thoughts:  In a lot of ways, this is the book I've been waiting for since we were first introduced to Ash in book 1.  Meghan got to tell her story over the course of three books and she had this fierce, enigmatic Fey beside her nearly every step of the way.  He was mysterious, dark, deadly and he loved his Summer Princess despite the fact that Summer and Winter were forbidden to fall in love.

*sigh*  I am such the sucker for forbidden love and mysterious men.

Right.  Having given his oath to find a way to survive in the Iron Kingdom at the end of book 3, Ash is determined to succeed and return to Meghan.  Besides the obvious issue of honor, if Ash gives up on his quest his very spirit will begin to unravel until he vanishes.  When temptation is thrown into his path, he has to decide what he really wants and if the sacrifices he'll make to achieve this will be worth it.

I really loved seeing Ash in his dark phase.  He seduced, maimed, fought and was a general menace.  Yet, he was always Ash.  Seeing his prior friendship with Puck firsthand was nice.  Experiencing some of the events that turned him into the cold-hearted Winter Prince was eye-opening.

All in all, this was a very satisfying ending to Meghan and Ash's journey.  Puck and Grim get to do the things they do so well and Ash gets to see things from a very human perspective.  It was a wonderfully fun, action-packed-to-the-gills adventure with a few of our favorite Fey and I'm sad to say goodbye to them.

  2. At last, we are treated to Ash's story. Ash has been kicked out of the winter court, and he is also unable to be by Meghan's side. Meghan Chase is now the Queen of the Iron Fey, and like all other Fey, Ash cannot exist around iron. So, Ash makes a vow to Meghan and himself - he will find a way back to her if it's the last thing he does.
