Review: Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Release date: December 27, 2011
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Every other day, Kali D'Angelo is a normal sixteen-year-old girl. She goes to public high school. She attends pep rallies. She's human.

And then every day in between . . . She's something else entirely.

Though she still looks like herself, every twenty-four hours predatory instincts take over and Kali becomes a feared demon-hunter with the undeniable urge to hunt, trap, and kill zombies, hellhounds, and other supernatural creatures. Kali has no idea why she is the way she is, but she gives in to instinct anyway. Even though the government considers it environmental terrorism.

When Kali notices a mark on the lower back of a popular girl at school, she knows instantly that the girl is marked for death by one of these creatures. Kali has twenty-four hours to save her and, unfortunately, she'll have to do it as a human. With the help of a few new friends.
My Thoughts:  I had a bit of a slow start getting into this book (and by that, I mean two or three chapters where I was looking around and wondering what was going on - in the book's defense I'm having a really weird day and it was probably more me than it.) but once I picked up the swing, it was on like Donkey Kong.  Or something.  I guess I'm trying to say that I was totally enthralled by the story.  There was a little gut wrenching, a little eye-popping at the things Kali routinely puts herself through, and a lot of longing for things to work out for this poor girl.

Now, I thought Kali was incredibly dynamic.  She fights because she has to.  She saves people because she can do nothing less.  She can't walk away, even when she's only human and not amped up by her supernatural side.  She's strong and brave, whether she's the hunter or the girl.  I like that.  Without going into too much detail, I like that she finds a group of people who begin to banish her loneliness.  I like that there is potential for a deeper relationship with the companions she finds.

A fast-paced, intriguing read with an interesting twist on supernatural mythology.  Jennifer Lynn Barnes has crafted a passel of likeable characters and plunked them into a gritty world.  Entirely enjoyable, it sank its claws in deep and kept the hits coming.  I'm hoping we get more in this world some time in the future because there feels like there's so darn much potential for more stories there. *crosses fingers*
