Review: The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1) by Julie Kagawa
Synopsis (Goodreads):
In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.
My Thoughts: This is probably going to shock everyone and their mother when I say this but... I am deeply in love with this book. Deeply. We're planning on running away together and skipping through a field of daisies to celebrate our blissful happiness. The downside is that all that frolicking will have to be done at night (those vampires are such needy little critters, aren't they?), but I'm willing to give up sunlight for this little beaut. Now, the things I loved are many and varied, so hold on to you pants because I'm about to go a little fangirly on ya'll.

OMG! THE BROKEN CITIES! I adore post-apocalyptic settings and this one was gorgeous and terrible. From the underground tunnels to the abandoned towns to the crumbling skyscrapers, Julie Kagawa did an outstanding job of making this world come alive in my imagination. The desperation and squalor, with a dash of hopelessness, before Allie is forced on the run gave me the shivers. Once she's out and about things come even more clearly into focus. This world is dying and if the vampires don't get them, the rabids or the raiders will.

Allie herself intrigues me. Her memories of her mother are sketchy, she doesn't know who her father is, and yet she has this ironclad belief that there's something more out there for the humans than being walking meals for the vampires. Having more or less grown up on the streets were the golden rule is that you look out for yourself first because nobody else will, this makes her sacrifice for her friends and her eventual realization that sometimes you do things for people without expecting anything in return even more poignant.

Honestly, I'm having some crazy love for this book. I want to know more about Kanin. I want to see how the surviving humans pull themselves up. I want to see how Allie ultimately fits into this world. I love the twists and turns. I love the broken cities. I love that Allie made the choice to not abandon her humanity in the face of overwhelming odds.

This series is most definitely on my watch list!

  1. Now that I'm following you via Feedburner, it doesn't tell me THE MINUTE you post (unless I see it on Twitter, which is a different story completely). That makes me sad, because then I can't creepily comment the minute after you post, thereby perpetuating the idea that I actively stalk you.

I think I will have to read this book eventually.

    1. Wait. You aren't actively stalking me? Wow. Ruin my day, why don't you.

This book was very very very very very good. With vampires. And things that are broken. And blood.

      *thumbs up*

    2. I do actively stalk you. It's just that I have to work extra hard to make it seem that way now that Feedburner is a tool.
