Review: I of the Storm by Neesha Hosein

I of the Storm by Neesha Hosein
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Being struck by lightning as a child sets Kira on a path to realization. Her life becomes a riveting series of events, and her guiding light is the supernatural. Her adventurous visions lead her through some spine-tingling discoveries about her husband, the man whose rigorous rules she obediently follows in a life filled with both tribulation and triumph.
My Thoughts: If I had been asked to review this book at the halfway point, I would have cringed a little. Not because the book is poorly written by any means but because the first half of the book is a tough look at the life of an abused woman. And it was hard to read. It was hard to see Kira continually going back to husband. It was hard to see her make excuses for his behavior and have so little sense of self-worth that she thought she couldn't do better. Trust me when I say that I'm aware that this is not an uncommon thought process in people who suffer from abuse but that doesn't make it any easier to read about.

Then something happened. Kira has to deal with a terrible tragedy and she begins to see things differently. Oh, not at first. In fact, she continues to make excuses for her asshat of a husband nearly up to the end... but she begins to see that there's a bigger picture. She begins making connections to the world around her and it makes her become aware in a way she wasn't before.

The subject matter propels this book into difficult to read territory for me, but the ending was oddly compelling. I liked how everything was linked together and how the explanations made sense. I liked that the book was unflinching about Kira's life. Yes, I was uncomfortable reading it and I honestly need a light, frothy romance after, but I appreciate that Neesha Hosein didn't sugarcoat what was done to Kira.

For now, though, I need some shapeshiftery romance to lighten my spirits.

  1. Not a light summer read, huh? But a good story, though? Cool! I don't usually read contemps but I'll keep it in mind when my brain gets sugar-coated on mindless romance ;)

  2. Sounds like a tough read. But we all need one of those every now and again.

    (and yes, shapeshiftery romance afterwards)
