Review: Magic Gifts by Ilona Andrews

Magic Gifts (Kate Daniels #5.4) by Ilona Andrews
Synopsis (Goodreads):
A dinner date after a hard day at work sounds heavenly. Of course, when that date is between the Beast Lord and Kate Daniels, things don’t go as planned. Before you know it, undead are running amok, heads are being chopped off, lawyers are deployed and used with extreme prejudice, and drunk vikings are calling people out.

Read at your own risk.
My Thoughts: I've been on a bit of a Kate Daniels reading blitz lately (jointly reviewing all the current books in the series with Amanda @ On a Book Bender) and after reading book 5 I was a little sad to think that there wouldn't be any new books for a while. Then fortune smiled upon me and I remembered that I had this lovely novella waiting in the wings.

I have to say that for being a short story this one packed a wallop. Kate and Curran are right in the thick of things, kicking butt and taking names. Curran's roaring. Kate's slashing and hacking. Vikings are drinking heavily. Pretty much this was everything I'd come to expect from Kate and her merry band of supernaturals. Shorter perhaps, but we all know that size isn't everything. Except when it comes to Curran, apparently. *ahem* Does the phrase "gloriously naked" ring any bells? *ahem*

Now, while I liked the overall arc and the glimpses of Kate and Curran interacting in their natural habitat (aka: their bedroom), I did think that the ending was almost too neat. Kate goes through a lot of shit to save the boy and when they finally made it to the mountain abode of the dwarf, everything was laid out in a painfully neat explanation. It's not that I wasn't expecting a happy ending, but after the climactic battle with the undead creeper I was expecting a little more.

Still, I'm pleased with this short and with Kate's world as a whole. FYI, I'm crazy excited for Andrea's book because I MUST KNOW what's going on with her and how she's going to straighten out her life. Overall, for those that have read the series, this is a fun and bloodthirsty addition.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but your review actually makes me want to read this novella. Me, wanting to read a novella. *mind boggles*

You should. It was fun. Plus... freebie and short enough that you should be able to read it quickly. *nods* Do it!

    2. *frowny face* I told you to download it back in December (or whenever it was free). However, the reason you can't find it anywhere is that it's going to be included as a bonus story in Gunmetal Magic. So, you'll have it soon-ish.

    5. Hey, you'll like this:

I'm currently going through my downloads folder to make sure all the ebooks I've won from giveaways (usually from your blog) made it onto my Kindle, and I came across a very interesting find. There was an ebook called Magic Gifts by Ilona Andrews.

I guess this means I *did* listen to you, after all.
