Review: Blood of the Demon by Diana Rowland

Blood of the Demon (Kara Gillian #2) by Diana Rowland
Synopsis (Goodreads):
BETWEEN HEAVEN AND HELL, MAN AND DEMON, SHE’S ABOUT TO FACE THE ONE THING SHE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SURVIVE.

Welcome to the world of Kara Gillian, a cop with a gift. Not only does she have the power of “othersight” to see what most people can’t even imagine, but she’s become the exclusive summoner of a demon lord. Or maybe it’s the other way around. The fact is, with two troublesome cases on her docket and a handsome FBI agent under her skin, Kara needs the help of sexy, insatiable Lord Rhyzkahl more than he needs her. Because these two victims, linked by suspicious coincidence, haven’t just been murdered. Something has eaten their souls.

It’s a case with roots in the arcane, but whose evil has flowered among the rich, powerful, and corrupt in Beaulac, Louisiana. And as the killings continue, Kara soon realizes how much there’s still to learn about demons, men, and things that kill in the night—and how little time she has to learn it.
My Thoughts: At the end of book 1, I was eager for Kara to throw caution to the wind and embark on a torrid, long term affair with Rhyzkahl. EAGER FOR IT. Alas, I knew that was a pipe dream and I'd have to content myself with a slow build up with Rhyzkahl and more time spent with Agent Ryan Kristoff. I will say, that Agent Kristoff's character ended up taking a different route than I thought he'd take - one which makes him infinitely more interesting to me - and now I'm very, very curious about him.

Now, Rhyzkahl was already interesting to me (I have a soft spot for uber-hot demons, you know), so every time he'd pop into the book I'd get a little giddy. It's clear he has a reason for courting Kara as his Summoner but he's very good at hiding his motivation. I'm not going to lie, I kinda love his devious mind. Also, he knows how to give the ladies what they want, doesn't he? Rawr!

This time around, the mystery Kara was trying to unravel highlighted her lack of knowledge in the arcane. She knows bits and pieces, enough to get by and keep herself safe when summoning demons, but she's floundering when it comes to the general knowledge. This lack gives Rhyzkahl the perfect opening to draw her in. She needs to know things, her Aunt - who she would turn to for answers - is out of the picture, and the clock is ticking as bodies start piling up.

I loved how Kara is slowly starting to let people into her life. She's still dealing with the fallout from her missing time (when everybody thought she was dead) and having friends to lean on is keeping her on her feet. Kristoff and his abilities have propelled his character into a whole new realm (I actually found him interesting - not as interesting as Rhyzkahl, mind you, but way more interesting than he was) and Kara's going to have to start asking some hard questions about exactly what he's capable of.

My wishlist for book 3: Kara embarks on a torrid, long term affair with Rhyzkahl. With lots of sexing. Make it so!

    1. According to Diana Rowland, Rhyzkahl rhymes with "please call". Does that help with the throes of passion thing? =D
