Review: The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa

The Lost Prince (The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten #1) by Julia Kagawa
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Don’t look at Them. Never let Them know you can see Them.

That is Ethan Chase’s unbreakable rule. Until the fey he avoids at all costs—including his reputation—begin to disappear, and Ethan is attacked. Now he must change the rules to protect his family. To save a girl he never thought he’s dare to fall for.

Ethan thought he had protected himself from his older sister’s world—the land of Faery. His previous time in the Iron Realm left him with nothing but fear and disgust for the world Meghan Chase has made her home, a land of myths and talking cats, of magic and seductive enemies. But when destiny comes for Ethan, there is no escape from a danger long, long forgotten.

My name is Ethan Chase. And I may not live to see my eighteenth birthday.
My Thoughts: I LOVED the Iron Fey series. Megan's journey was so well written and fun in a creepy, terrifying, heartbreaking sort of way. Getting the chance to see how Ethan has fared - the brother left behind when Megan took the Iron throne - is absolutely fantastic.

Honestly, Ethan hasn't had an easy time of it. He's had to pretend his sister is dead, pretend like he doesn't see the fey who bedevil him. He's become an outcast in the human world because of the things he has to do to protect himself. He's starting at a new school and his appearance (iron piercings to keep the fey at bay, inside-out shirt, general sullen attitude) is already a point against him. When he's caught by one of the popular girls arguing with a fey, things go from bad to worse.

I *get* where Ethan's coming from. I get that he had a really horrible experience with the fey the first time around and their constant watching and trickery has practically ruined his life. He's a good guy who's caught in a bad situation. Unlike Meghan, who had Puck and then Ash to help her through her issues, Ethan has no one he can talk to. He's alone in this until Kenzie comes along and even then he tries to protect her.

I loved getting back to the Nevernever. It's so darkly seductive. It's a candy apple that might be full of poison - pretty on the outside with the potential to kill you on the first bite. It was awesome seeing several familiar faces and getting to know some new ones. I'm heartily excited to see how Ethan and company handle all the twists and turns that I'm sure are coming in the next book!

  1. I only read the first 3 of the other series but this one really does appeal to me! I bet Ethan has it just a bit harder :(

    1. You never read The Iron Knight? It was my favorite of the series. Just... Oh, ASH!

Yeah, Ethan has it tough. I liked where Julie Kagawa took him, mentally and emotionally. He's had to deal with so much. Poor guy.

    1. Very dark, which I liked too. It also made me want to go back and reread Meghan's story.

  3. Question. How does Ethan compare to Meghan in terms of being the MC?

    1. Hmm. Good question. Ethan is so much more... jaded, I'd say, about the fey. He doesn't trust them AT ALL. He's jumpy and surly. At this point I think I like Meghan more because her story has shown so many more sides of her (and she has Ash), but Ethan's story shows definite promise.

That's a tough question. They are very different, but I think that Ethan can grab this story in a chokehold and beat it into submission. Or maybe it'll give him a smackdown. Either way. It'll be interesting.

    2. I occasionally had problems with Meghan as a narrator (especially when she was waffling between Puck and Ash, but that's just because I have issues with love triangles) so I was curious if Ethan would be similar, or if he has his own special brand of issues.

    3. He definitely has his own brand of issues. Many of them are with Meghan and how she had to leave him behind. Plus, no love triangle. None.

    4. You know the lack of love triangle is a SELLING POINT with me. Hmm. I think I'll have to keep my eye out for this book.

  4. This is the second review I've seen of this! I think that means I should continue on with the Iron Fey series!

    And holy hottie Ethan!

  5. You've sold me. I loved The Iron Fey, but I wasn't sure I wanted more or wanted Ethan.

    1. It's different from the first series. In a good way, I think. I liked it. That's all I can tell you.
