Review: Bait by Annie Nicholas

Bait (Angler #1) by Annie Nicholas
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Live bait makes all the difference.

Sent on a mission to lure Budapest’s vampire Overlord into a trap, Connie Bence is instead caught red-handed by the dark Casanova.

Her employer has concrete proof of the dubious leader’s misdeeds but she is surprised when this ruthless killer, Rurik, offers her protection and rescues her from his own kind. It plants seeds of doubt in her mind and she begins to question his guilt.

Now she is thrown into his world where blackmail determines her every move and where she must betray those she cares about or let them die. The stakes are high. She either puts her trust in Rurik or leads him to his execution.

Love or life.
My Thoughts: I'm not quite sure what I was expecting with this book but it ended up being highly enjoyable. From Connie's first interaction with Rurik to her willingness to trust her gut and believe in him when everyone around her was telling her he was evil and needed to be destroyed, I was hooked. Oh, ha. Hooked. That wasn't intentional. I swear!

Right. So. Connie. Connie's composure was rattled when Rurik risks himself to save her. Then he goes all noble and doesn't boink her brains out at the first opportunity and she starts to fall for him. I don't know. It worked for me. I was even able to overlook the drugging and offering her up as a nummy treat to a very nasty vampire. I understood where Rurik was coming from. I liked the two of them together. I really liked when the two of them got down to business. There's nothing like some unrestrained boning to really break down the walls between two people.

Probably the only thing that made me blink in this book was trying to figure out whose side people were on. There was backstabbing, secret backstabbing, backstabbing with lies, backstabbing with hidden agendas... basically, you need a roadmap to figure it out. It worked, don't get me wrong. It worked and it kept you guessing but you really never knew who to trust when the chips were down.

Bottom line, I was pleasantly surprised by what I was given and I'm very glad I picked this book up.
