Review: Deadworld by J.N. Duncan

Deadworld (Jackie Rutledge #1) by J.N. Duncan
Synopsis (Goodreads):
She’s as tough as anything haunting Chicago’s streets. But to deal with an inhuman power that won’t stay buried, this FBI agent needs help that comes at an immortal price…

Jackie Rutledge has seen her share of supernatural killers. But her latest murder case is what recurring nightmares are made of. Brutally exsanguinated human victims, vanishing-into-the-ether evidence, and a city on the edge of panic mean that she and her psychic partner, Laurel, are going to need more than just backup …

So Jackie is fine with any help rugged P.I. Nick Anderson can give—even if that includes the impish ghost and sexy vampire who make up his team. But Nick is hiding secrets of his own. And Jackie’s investigation has plunged them both into a vengeful game reaching back centuries—and up against a malevolent force hungry for more than just victory…
My Thoughts: Jackie Rutledge is one hard-talking, hard-hitting, hard-drinking lady. She's the type of person you hope you don't run into in a dark alley when emotions are running high because she's known to hit first and ask questions later. She's also known for taking random men home to screw senseless. I like this lady already!

Things I liked that didn't involve Jackie, a bottle of alcohol, and nudity: Sheriff Nick and his sexy coat (totally shallow, yes, but there's something about a cowboy that makes my heart skip a beat). Oh, and the worldbuilding was pretty fab also. Teeming with vampires, creeptastic serial killers, ghosts, and psychics, poor mortal Jackie really shouldn't fit in. Yet, her dogged determination and her personal demons (those are metaphorical demons, btw) make her a match for anything that's thrown at her during the course of this investigation.

Suitably dark (because dark is the new black...no, that's not right), I liked the brutality of this world. The deaths are coldly vicious, the bad guy is powerful and creepy, and these guys sure know how to hold a grudge. I can only imagine that the things Jackie faced in this book are going to cause problems in later books. I like problems. They make reading so fun.

  1. Sounds good, but also a bit samey. I definitely get bored of "independent", hard-drinking, screw-anything-senseless urban fantasy heroines.

    1. Well, Jackie has some issues she needs to work through. Perhaps she'll give up her hard drinkin' ways in the next installment!
