Review: Broken by Shiloh Walker

Broken (Rafferty #2) by Shiloh Walker
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Quinn Rafferty is working as a bounty hunter for a private detective agency in St. Louis when a new neighbor catches his eye. He's drawn to her-but he has his own soul to mend before he can worry about anyone else.

Sarah McElyea is on the run, but not for the usual reasons a woman goes on the lam. She has a plan for her future. And as much as she finds herself attracted to her gruff, tough neighbor, she can't risk telling him the secrets she's hiding.

But Quinn must get closer to Sarah when she turns out to be the target of his new missing persons case, and both Quinn and Sarah will have to expose their true feelings-as well as their fragile hearts-if their love is to survive.
My Thoughts: This one was fun. It's twisty, as romantic suspense books often are, and it honestly kept me guessing right up until everything was spelled out. I liked Quinn's gruffness. I liked Sara's determination to see her plan through to the end. I liked that they found each other despite how both of them were trying their hardest to not get entangled in any sort of relationship. I just liked it.

Sara is probably the harder of the two to define. You really don't know what's going on with her until late in the game. She's very good at playing her cards close to the chest. Quinn's not so bad at that, himself. Neither of them flat out lie about themselves but they manage to deflect personal questions so that the little details about themselves get lost in the shuffle. Things like, Quinn's job and why Sara is on the run. You know, little things.

Shiloh Walker's characters are wonderfully damaged -- either by their upbringing or by the events that put them where they are in the present. Yet, they're still fighters. The claw and punch their way out of the hole they've been forced into and they come out stronger for it. The push and pull between Quinn and Sara is fun and it keeps the two of them on their toes. Oddly, enough, as strained as the relationship between Quinn and his brother is, I liked how the two of them interacted. Quinn is surly as hell and he isn't thrilled by how Luke can sometimes read his emotions over long distances, but he's the first one Quinn turns to when he thinks his feelings for Sara might be more than just physical. Boys. They're so cute.

All in all, a fun romantic suspense that kept me guessing right up to the bitter end.

  1. It's been a looooooong time since I picked up any romantic suspense. But I do like wonderfully damaged characters. Hmm.
