Review: Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles #2) by Marissa Meyer
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Cinder returns in the second thrilling installment of the New York Times-bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother and the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she has no choice but to trust him, though he clearly has a few dark secrets of his own.

As Scarlet and Wolf work to unravel one mystery, they find another when they cross paths with Cinder. Together, they must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen who will do anything to make Prince Kai her husband, her king, her prisoner.

My Thoughts: You know how some books are so good that no matter how many pages it is, it wouldn't be enough? Yeah. That's me with this book. I loved Cinder and I was fully prepared to be wowed with this installment and.... well, it blew me away. This might be my soft spot for tragic heroes talking but... WOLF!

Right. So. Book 2 crisscrosses between Cinder's story and Scarlet's story. Now, Cinder's interesting, don't get me wrong, but it was the secrets that Scarlet was unraveling that kept me frantically turning pages. And since all secrets lead back to Cinder... it ended up being crazy-good. I LOVED that Kai is so torn about Cinder, btw. He doesn't know the truth yet and he feels betrayed. Yet, there's that little part of him that hopes that Cinder gets away just to thwart the evil Queen. That Queen is crazy, you know. Driven by greed and her lust for more power. I'm holding the thought in the back of my mind that she's going to get what's coming to her at some point and it's going to be gloriously terrible.

Until that happens, though, I guess we're stuck watching her planet wide reign of terror come to fruition.

But enough about Queen Crazy Pants. Let's talk about Wolf. Wolf, who captured my heart when he was first made eye contact with Scarlet. Wolf, who was thrust into this life with no chance to say no. Wolf Wolf Wolf. I like the guy. I like how tentative he is with Scarlet and how there's this side of him that is struggling to find a way out of the mess they were stuck in the middle of. My tortured-hero, werewolf-loving side is rearing its ugly head and I wouldn't have it any other way.

A solid second book that gives us answers to some of the mysteries in Cinder's past while moving her and her new-found motley crew forward. My most profound wish at this point is that it was 2014 already so I could see what happens next. What? I like all this crazy dystopian, sci-fi, fairytale retelling stuff we've got going on here.

  1. I really need to read this one now. I have been putting it off for months because I was so upset when I found out that the main characters were not Cinder and Kai. I guess this just gives me an excuse to love another werewolf. I do have a thing for werewolves lately :)

Thanks for the great review, glad you liked the book :)

    1. Cinder and Kai had some *things* to work out, so this gives them time to come to terms with all the things that have been thrown at them. Plus... WOLF!

  3. OMG I loved Scarlet too! The Lunars is definitely one of my favorite series right now and I just can't wait until 2014 either! I loved how the mystery was unraveled and how Scarlet and Cinder's stories connected so well with each other! Great review :)
