Synopsis (Goodreads):
Consumed by madness and tormented by dark memories of blood and death, Hadrian Lucretius, King of the Validus Clan, has returned after living in self-imposed exile for nearly three hundred and fifty years.

To maintain peace with the vampires, Eva Maldonado is offered as a sacrifice to the crazed vampire king by her father, the alpha of the Silveria Shifter Pack. Hadrian’s reputation is both legendary and lethal; he is ruthless, bloodthirsty, lusty, and soulless. When Eva arrives at the ancient fortress high in the Carpathian Mountains, she is shocked to find a ravaged man with dark burning eyes filled with loneliness and dangerous desire.

Would she be his lover…or his prey? His savior…or his victim? Would Hadrian lure her into madness or would their perilous passion be their redemption?
My Thoughts: My love affair with damaged, tortured heroes continues unabated! Hadrian is... umm, cracked might be a nice term. I mean, he wasn't doing so well when we came across him in the previous book. At least he's mostly sane now. Or... he mostly tries to be sane with only minor periods of crazy. That's a step up! But really, with everything he's been through and the guilt he's been carrying around for AGES, it's no wonder that he's a little off kilter. Poor guy.

The way Eva's treated by the Pack is awful. She's abused and left to fend for herself and the truth about her that Hadrian uncovers just makes what she's had to endure even worse. I do love how the two of them naturally gravitate toward one another time and time again in the castle. I liked that Eva's very presence calmed Hadrian's demon. I liked the two of them together, period.

You guys want to know who I'm *really* rooting for now? Falcon. He stood by his king in his darkest time. He could have taken the clan but he believed that Hadrian would find a way back to them with his sanity intact. I respect that. I imagine that his story is going to make me all weepy, what with the forbidden love and all that.

It was fun seeing the characters from previous books pop in. I like that Silvie is trying to make changes. And, yes, I love when damaged, tortured heroes find the strength to stand tall despite everything they've been through. Meaning that Hadrian and Eva were an incredibly fun way couple to spend some time with.

  1. Was there even a question of your love affair with damaged, tortured heroes being in turmoil? BECAUSE THAT JUST SEEMS WRONG.

    1. NO! Sometimes I like to test and make sure that I'm still drawn to the tortured, damaged type. Thus far, I have not disappointed myself.

  2. I don't know---I mean I am not convinced at all that you have a thing for damaged heroes. I mean you never mention how much you love them or want them to be loved. In fact, you should get on that LOL :)

Actually I want to know more about this Falcon!

  3. I won't even lie. I've got a shallow streak and that cover totally pulled me in. It sounds fantastic though. I LOVE a tortured hero and him being "mostly" sane with just a little crazy so makes me want to grab the book even more. Great review Kelly!

    1. Ha! It's cool. Covers are my weakness, too! And this one is purty!
