Review: Forbidden Blood by Felicity Heaton

Forbidden Blood (Vampire Venator #1) by Felicity Heaton
Synopsis (Goodreads):
In a dark world where vampires exist and where Source Blood, a rare human blood type, can bestow godlike powers upon them, the vampire Venators of the Sovereignty fight to protect the humans by banishing those who drink it to the endless dark.

Exiled from his family and with only his duty to sustain him, Kearn has been on the trail of an elusive Source Blood abuser for three years. When he saves a beautiful human female from the vampire’s grasp, it turns out she’s the lead he’s been waiting for. Amber is a Source Blood and the perfect bait, but for who?

As they race to catch the vampire and survive the cruel games he plays, Amber is pulled deeper into Kearn’s world and discovers the painful secrets he hides behind his handsome but emotionless exterior—hurt that she has the power to heal if she is brave enough.

Forbidden Blood is a dark, sensual tale of betrayal, revenge and a love that knows no bounds.
My Thoughts: It took a bit for me to fall into this world, but once I did, I fell hard and I liked it. Kearn has been given a duty that should have been a blessing and instead, because of the circumstances that led to him being chosen over his brother, he hates it and has isolated himself from everything he used to hold dear. Since this duty comes with physical changes (hair and eye color that make him stand out from other vampires and a tattoo to help him channel his power), it's something he has to face every time he looks in a mirror. I felt for the poor guy. To hate this duty that he can't rid himself of AND be estranged from his family made what he's going through so tragic.

Amber, on the other hand, has it pretty easy. Well, except for that whole thing where her blood is highly prized and if the wrong people get their hands on her she'll suffer a world of pain and all sorts of other badness. Good thing Kearn stumbles over her when things aren't looking to good, huh? These two simmer for a bit before combusting. Just the way I like it.

Felicity Heaton has built an intriguing world with classes and levels of nobility. The nobles bend the rules when then can and humans are looked down on. Bloody, a little dark, and full of lots of twists and backstabbing... which are pretty much all the things I look for in a book about vampires.

    1. Yeah. It was free. But, like, a year ago. Wow. I need to read faster so I can clear out those freebies!

  2. Felicity Heaton can be hit or miss for me. However, this sounds really good. Wish I would have caught it when it was free... although $3.99 isn't too bad.

    1. I've tended on the hit side more often than not with her. This one was good. I liked the world and the abilities the vamps were given. *thumbs up*

    1. Her schedule looks pretty full in the future, too. I don't know how she keeps all these worlds and story lines straight when she's writing so many!

    2. Oh, I know. I have no idea how she does it either. I still want this one to continue though... *sigh*
