Synopsis (Goodreads):
Richard Murphy is a hard-boiled, octogenarian Hollywood detective who thinks he's seen it all--until he and his younger partner witness a horrific murder committed by a galloping centaur. Now the elderly P.I. worries he'll be next on the killer's list. But unbeknownst to Murphy, one of his on-line friends is more than just a master chess player. He's a member of Detachment 1039, America's secret super soldier program tasked with combatting the supernatural. Murphy and his partner in crime-solving are soon visited by the Detachment, who enlist the semi-retired P.I. in tracking down a serial-killing centaur who's come to L.A. to reap the souls of the innocent and the wicked.

The Stone Soldiers are America's secret weapon against the forces of darkness. A small detachment of psychics, supernatural soldiers and men turned to living stone, they respond to threats conventional forces are not prepared to face. Battling myths, monsters and magic around the world, the men and women of Detachment 1039 stand ready to do whatever it takes to stop evil in its tracks.
Thoughts on Pale Horseman: Another fast paced, action packed adventure with Detachment 1039. Kenslir has his hands full this time as a mythic monster rampages through LA. *takes a long look at my last sentence and laughs* Good times, man. Good times.

B-grade actors, a centaur who's more than he seems, and hints about Josie's fantastic awesomeness abound. Also, a lot of people die. Some of them are even good guys. Which could be sad until you recall that DEATH DOES NOT STOP DETACHMENT 1039! (I feel like I should write out that number so you can really FEEL how I'm bellowing it as I type.) (Except, I always say TEN THIRTY NINE when I say it in my head and what if no one else says it that way? What if they're all "One thousand thirty nine, thankyouverymuch"? I would be forced to become a social hermit because I'M NOT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!)

(Gonna be honest, I lost my train of thought somewhere around the time I was shouting things at my computer.)

Right. So. Death. Mayhem. A pretty badass bad guy. As always, Kenslir and crew do what needs to be done to take care of business. Even if it puts their nearest and dearest on the line.

Like I said, good times.

    1. The series is fun and light. And slightly insane. That's probably why I like it.
