Review: I Zombie I by Jack Wallen

Synopsis (Goodreads):
"The virus has spread."

In a moment of pure chaos, the majority of the Earth's population has become the walking dead. One man promises to help bring the truth to light.

"The lies have spread."

When journalist Jacob Plummer is infected, Jacob turns to the written word to not only ease the pain of change, but to bring to surface a truth far deeper and deadlier than anyone could have imagined.

"The truth must now be spread."

With the help of a rag-tag group of survivors, Jacob helps to fight off the growing undead horde in hopes of saving himself and the planet from the rot growing within.
My Thoughts: Ya'll know that I LOVE zombie books, right? I love them at all stages of infection - when bad things first start, when they fall apart even more, when the world is on the edge of dying - I'm just stupidly in love with reading about people trying to figure out how to survive in a world where one bite will send you to a place you don't want to be. This book starts in the time directly following a catastrophic event that ultimately either kills most of the world's population or turns them into ravening zombies.

Infected early on, Jacob struggles to maintain his grip on humanity so that he doesn't hurt the other survivors in his small group. His fight against this disease eating away at him provide a creepy counterpoint to the rapid destruction of the world around them. His insights into what's driving the zombies to kill helps the survivors find ways to safeguard themselves. As Jacob falls farther and farther under the thrall of the disease, he becomes oddly more human in his desire to make sure that the woman he's fallen for and the girl he first saved are safe from him.

At times brutal and disjointed, which worked incredibly well with both the lack of information the survivors have and the situation Jacob is going through, this story laid some excellent groundwork for what's to come. Jacob was committed to telling the truth of what had brought the world to this point and he did an admirable job.

  4. Wow. This book sounds pretty epic. I am loving the premise of someone fighting the disease and gaining more humanity as he becomes less human...way awesome!
