At the beginning of June, I went on a reading binge of Tessa Dare's Spindle Cove series. I read 3 full length novels and 1 novella over a three day period. Simply put, this series was everything I needed it to be when I picked it up.
It had characters that were flawed and breathtaking and who learned from their mistakes. They became better, stronger, more wonderful people as the stories progressed. The village they live in was as alive as the characters. The shenanigans the various personalities that inhabit Spindle Cove got into were fun and they entertained me.
That was EXACTLY what I was looking for.
(And now I'm going to pause here and tell you this this isn't a PSA for you to go out and buy the series and read it IMMEDIATELY - although if you did do that, I wouldn't be upset.)
I'm kind of wondering if other people will have the same reaction to it that I had. Honestly, I don't know. Book 1 hit my reading sweet spot. Whether it was because of my mood or that I just needed a little while to escape from reality with a bunch of strong, intelligent women and men, IT WORKED FOR ME.
I would love to hear what books (series or otherwise) made you do some fangirl (or boy!) flailing when you picked it up. Was it just good timing or something elusive (and possibly magical) that made all the pieces come together and drag you into their world?
Talk to me! I want to hear what you have to say!
Seanan McGuire and Suzanne McLeod had this effect on me. I think they were the perfect mix of stuff and I just wanted to carry on reading forever. I guess it's good that they're both fairly new series! It's probably partly timing. Sometimes I liked to be sucked into a world and forget about everything else. Sometimes it's that I just need to know what happens to the chracters next. It helps if they're easy to read books too as I feel a sense of acheivement getting through 5 in one week due to binde redaing!
ReplyDeleteI think timing is a big component. If you're looking for something edgy and dark and you pick up a sweet historical romance, it doesn't gel with you the way it should.
DeleteI LOVE that sense of achievement!
Right before I got into book blogging, the Night Huntress series and Karin Slaughter's series had me DEVOURING the series. In fact, between those two series, I think I read 10 books over spring break. Because... *FLAILS*
ReplyDeleteIt's been a while since I've had that happen--but mostly because I think I've been reading newer books and I have to wait for books.
I have so many of Karin Slaughter's books sitting here and I'm a little scared to read them because.... WILL! Well, I'm afraid because Angie is such a ravenous bitch and I don't want to see her get her talons into Will. POOR WILL! *weeps*
DeleteThere are some series that just make me crazy, but I'm really a fan of vampires so Chicagoland and Morganville are my favorite drugs and I devoure a new book really fast after release. So I get your addiction too.
ReplyDeleteI'm rereading the Morganville series right now. SO FUN! I love those crazy kids (and vamps)!
DeleteI think that I'm a mood reader to be sure. I sometimes pick up a book and start it and really can not stand it but sometimes since I spent money on the book I'll put it back on my shelf. Sometimes coming back to it at a later date will change my mind about the series or the book. I have to say that I love when books can hit that sweet spot for me. I recently had this with Dare You To because it was everything I was looking for in a book at that moment and it was a great story.
ReplyDeleteGreat discussion post!
Yes! The sweet spot is a wonderful thing!
