Review: Archangel's Consort by Nalini Singh

Archangel's Consort (Guild Hunter #3) by Nalini Singh
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux and her lover, the lethally beautiful archangel Raphael, have returned home to New York only to face an uncompromising new evil…

A vampire has attacked a girls’ school—the assault one of sheer, vicious madness—and it is only the first act. Rampant bloodlust takes vampire after vampire, threatening to make the streets run with blood. Then Raphael himself begins to show signs of an uncontrolled rage, as inexplicable storms darken the city skyline and the earth itself shudders. The omens are suddenly terrifyingly clear.

An ancient and malevolent immortal is rising. The violent winds whisper her name: Caliane. She has returned to reclaim her son, Raphael. Only one thing stands in her way: Elena, the consort who must be destroyed…
My Thoughts: I've been enjoying my time back in Elena and Raphael's world but one thing I've noticed is that the ... resolution (for lack of a better word) to their issues seems to come very quickly. Now, I'm not saying that there isn't a fair amount of foreplay before the main event (there's lots of foreplay!) or that the resolution is necessarily lacking (it worked, it definitely worked) but I kept looking at the dwindling pages and thinking "Umm... how is this going to be tied up in time? HOW?" Everything worked out and it worked out nicely, I was just not quite expecting the way it went.

Anyway. Elena is working through her issues with being an immortal. She's standing up against Raphael when he gets all dictatorial and starts throwing orders around, yet she's willing to bend when the orders will put either herself or Raphael in danger. She's learning to trust him with all her secrets and he's learning to do the same. Meanwhile, some of the ongoing tension between her and her father is addressed. I don't necessarily agree with the way that Elena is willing to bend to him when he's so unmoving, but family ties are hard to break and she's trying to be there for her half-sisters. And that, I get.

Raphael is his usual sexy, powerful self. While part of him wants Elena to obey him without question, he sees that the reason he fell in love with her in the first place was because didn't let him run roughshod over her. Still, he's a badass archangel with a whole lot of power and sometimes he gets it in his head that his way is the only way. Good thing Elena is there to smack some sense into him.

I love the Seven. I can't wait to get to hear their stories. Aodhan's hatred of being touched, Jason's desire to end it all, Dimitri's sexiness... I want to know what makes these guys tick.

Overall, I enjoyed this installment. The ending shifts the dynamic of the Cadre and that could have big repercussions in the future. I still can't wait to see Raphael's Seven get their HEAs and how Raphael and Elena's relationship continues to evolve.
