Review: Mark of the Vampire Queen by Joey W. Hill

Mark of the Vampire Queen (Vampire Queen #2) by Joey W. Hill
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Full servant. With his new title, Jacob must attend to Lady Lyssa's every need, venturing into a world of passion darker than he's ever known. As a vampire hunter he wasn't prepared to embrace a world where humans are sexual commodities, but he has adapted. Now he finds the integrity of his soul challenged as he serves his Mistress's needs as fully as he services her desires.

He loves her, though other servants warn against giving her his soul. Everyone knows that Vampires have no regard for humans, so why would a Vampiress bother treating a mere sex toy with respect? But Jacob knows a human servant is far more than that. His Mistress needs a warrior, a friend and a lover. A man who will serve her in all ways, even if he has to betray the priceless treasure of her love.
My Thoughts: Confession time: I'm not a huge fan of the dominant woman scenario when I'm reading D/s books. However, this book works for me because Jacob is a Alpha in his own right who chooses to submit to his lady. Reading that, it doesn't sound like it should work but, OMG!, it does. Jacob pushes but he accepts his punishments when he goes too far. Lyssa needs the mental and physical stimulation of someone who challenges her and keeps her on her toes. Yet, she's still a Queen and she needs to be obeyed. It's a fine line the two of them balance on and Joey Hill makes it work.

As the disease eating away at Lyssa's immortality continues to ravage her, Jacob is frantic to find a way to extend her life long enough for her vampiric allies to find a cure. All while managing to keep the fact that she's contracted the disease a secret. The usual sexual shenanigans take place. Well, usual for vampires, I guess. I've never been to a full-out orgy like they have. I'm guessing that having foursomes on display are the way things are done. *shrug* I'm willing to believe it, in any case.

It's been a while since I read book 1 but I found the conclusions of Lyssa and Jacob's story to be immensely satisfying. Bad things are afoot and their world is in danger of crumbling around them. Yet they continue on, pushing one another and trying to do the best they can for the vampire community.

  1. Huh. It sounds like this one may be a *bit* too much for me. Maybe.

    1. It's a little harder than some of the books you read. I dunno. Maybe you'd secretly dig it.

    1. There's lots of vampire naughtiness. If that's your thing, you'll like it. If not... well, maybe you should give it a pass.

  3. I tried this book a couple of years ago and just could not get into it. I gave up on it after about 50 pages.
