Review: Bayou Moon by Ilona Andrews

Bayou Moon (The Edge #2) by Ilona Andrews
Synopsis (Goodreads):
The Edge lies between worlds, on the border between the Broken, where people shop at Walmart and magic is a fairytale–and the Weird, where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny…

Cerise Mar and her unruly clan are cash poor but land rich, claiming a large swathe of the Mire, the Edge swamplands between the state of Louisiana and the Weird. When her parents vanish, her clan’s long-time rivals are suspect number one.

But all is not as it seems. Two nations of the Weird are waging a cold war fought by feint and espionage, and their conflict is about to spill over into the Edge—and Cerise’s life . William, a changeling soldier who left behind the politics of the Weird, has been forced back into service to track down a rival nation’s spymaster.

When William’s and Cerise’s missions lead them to cross paths, sparks fly—but they’ll have to work together if they want to succeed…and survive.
My Thoughts: You know when you pick up a series and you think you'll like it (of course, otherwise you wouldn't have picked it up in the first place) but you don't expect to love it (just because you're stubborn like that) and then you read the first book and you're all "I MUST HAVE THE NEXT" because it's so good, so you pick up the 2nd and end up staying up until 2 in the morning reading and the only reason you put the book down at that point was because you realized that you have to get up in 3 hours and you don't just want to read the book, you want to EXPERIENCE it in all it's fabulosity? Yeah, that was me. I... think I might love this series.

Why? Oh, I don't know. Maybe it's because I have a weakness for surly, damaged, slightly crazed heroes who try so hard to figure out how to make a girl love them. William was perfect in that regard. His animal side makes him look at the world differently than others do. His horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE childhood has left him thinking he's unlovable. Because of the way he was imprisoned as a chile, his Changeling nature isn't something he'd want to pass on to his children if he ever did find someone to spend his life with. Yet... he's still searching. He wants a family of his own. He wants to be loved. He's studied the phrases to use to woo a lady (and wasn't it hilarious when he started spouting pickup lines to Cerise?!?!). He's just so wonderfully damaged and he doesn't quite think like a man. It made him unpredictable and a little dark. And I loved it.

Living in the Edge has shaped Cerise. In her words, she trapped by her family, by the feud, by all the people who depend on her. She wants more than what she has but she can't walk away. She's strong and deadly and William respects that about her. Well, he does once he realizes what she can do with her sword. I loved her extended family. They're so whacked out and yet they make sense. Their whole darn world makes sense.

Dark, dirty and full of unexpected monsters - not all of them of the bad variety - this is one world that I love getting lost in. William just might be one of my new favorite slightly feral killers. It's always a good plan to have the thing that scares the bad guys on your side. Especially when he turns into a big cuddly wolf when needed.
