Review: Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder

Inside Out (Insider #1) by Maria V. Snyder
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Keep Your Head Down.
Don't Get Noticed.
Or Else.

I'm Trella. I'm a scrub. A nobody. One of thousands who work the lower levels, keeping Inside clean for the Uppers. I've got one friend, do my job and try to avoid the Pop Cops. So what if I occasionally use the pipes to sneak around the Upper levels? The only neck at risk is my own…until I accidentally start a rebellion and become the go-to girl to lead a revolution.
My Thoughts: I picked up this book on a whim, knowing pretty much nothing about it other than the synopsis sounded interesting. I ended up having so much fun with it! As an added plus, I actually figured out the mystery behind Gateway before it was spelled out for us. That makes me feel accomplished.

Trella was a interesting character. I didn't always like her attitude or her reasoning on some of the things she did, but I could see where she was coming from. She's a loner who can't handle the masses of scrubs on the lower levels and who doesn't fit in. She hides out in the pipes and she steers clear of entanglements. Did her bitterness at finding out she was the abandoned child of an Upper get to me? Yes. She knows so little of life in the upper levels that she jumps to all the wrong conclusions. She's angry. I was totally behind that. *I'd* be angry in her shoes. Yet... she does what she needs to do to get the job done.

This is a wonderfully dark, almost claustrophobic, dystopian. The world they live in is so narrow and compacted. The people in charge are harsh and unforgiving. Trella's escape into the pipes and the Gap opens up the scope of the world a bit but it's creepy that there's nowhere to hide and there's so little privacy.

Honestly, I'm eyeballing book 2 now because I really like where this one ended and I want to know more. MOAR!

  3. This is definitely reassuring for someone who say loves everything by Maria V. Snyder *waves hands around*. I still have to try this series, but if the heroine is that cool then I say WHAT THE HECK AM I WAITING FOR?

  6. I bought this book last year! It was both books in one volume -- I can't wait to read it! I was a little meh about Maria's Study series ... loved the first 2, but didn't like the third, so maybe since this is only two, I'll like them. :) We'll see! Great review!
