Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.My Thoughts: I wasn't quite sure what to think of this book in the beginning. It took me a while to get into the characters' heads -- in part, I think, because Janie is so often is in other people's heads and dreams -- but once I found my groove, I found myself really enjoying it.
She can't tell anybody about what she does they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can’t control.
Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant.
Janie's life is screwed up. Her mom's an alcoholic who doesn't seem to care one way or another what's going on in Janie's life (although she does have a moment or two later on where she actually acted mom-like) and Janie's dealing with some BIG STUFF. I mean, being pulled into someone's dream against her will isn't something that comes with a guide book. She has few friends, no parental figure, and she's doing the best she can with the little she's given.
Cabel confused me at first. I wasn't sure what was going on with him but once the pieces started to fall into place it made sense. HE made sense. Speaking of which, his life is just as screwy as Janie's, just in an entirely different way.
While the book started a bit slow, I was pleasantly surprised by the overall turn of events and was rooting for Janie and Cabe by the end. I do have the next two books lined up and I'm ready to see where they take me.

ReplyDeleteIt's more on the disturbing side for Janie. Especially since she can't control it. The book, however, was enjoyable.
DeleteI've read a couple of Lisa McMann's books, but I haven't read the Wake trilogy yet. Thanks for the warning about it starting slow. This way I'll know that it will get better the longer I read.
ReplyDeleteI just had a tough time getting a feel for Janie because she's so defined by the dreams she falls into. I've read book 2 at this point and I'm loving this idea. SO CREEPY GOOD.

DeleteI remember this book being talked about. I remember people liking it. However, I cannot remember why it never make it on TBR list.
ReplyDeleteI'm more interested to read it after seeing that the series gets better as it progresses.
I haven't read the final book yet, so I don't know how everything ends, but I'm enjoying this series!
