Synopsis (Goodreads):
Fear not the second dawn of humanity.

After contracting a strange virus that strikes only a fraction of the population, Malaika is ushered to a quarantine facility. The luckier patients are released to resume their normal lives, but with growing signs of mutation in her body, Malaika already knows she won’t be going home. What will become of her? Who is that mysterious hooded man with the glowing eyes? And why does she feel so strongly drawn to him?
Thoughts on Alien Awakening: I really, REALLY enjoy everything Regine Abel has written and this book is no exception. Malaika is dealing with some heavy stuff and she's willing to embrace the potential of what's coming with grace and bravery. Considering she's literally changing daily and has to figure out how to live in her new skin while saying goodbye to her old life, this is phenomenal.

Now, having Zayek there to ease her transition and mentor her miiiiight have helped a little. Although Malaika can't feel the connection between them as deeply as Zayek can, she does feel something for him. And the deeper she gets into her transition, the deeper her feelings become. Which is pretty much exactly what I want whenever I pick up a book so YAY!

As I said, Regine Abel's books thrill me with every one I pick up and I'm always down to see what predicament she's going to put her characters into. For all it's short, this story packs a sweet punch that hit the spot.
