Synopsis (Goodreads):
Arthos, the Infinite City, is a place of alien wonders and indescribable beauty—and, most importantly for Samantha, it’s also halfway across the universe from her abusive ex-fiancĂ©. She came to the city desperate for a fresh start, but she finds herself downtrodden on a world of aloof alien beings with little hope of finding her place—and a good chance of being kidnapped or killed before she can even settle in.

At least until she is saved by an irresistible alien with piercing eyes and a seductive smile.

Alkorin is the living embodiment of temptation, and he makes no effort to disguise his desire for her. But when his past threatens to drag her into a dangerous underworld, she discovers he isn’t who he claims to be. After enduring so much suffering, can she bear to take a leap of faith with this mysterious alien? Can she trust him with not only her life, but her heart?
Thoughts on Shielded Heart: Okay. First off, the undercity of Arthos is a wonderful, terrible, hot mess of a place and I kinda love it. It's dangerous and deadly and Sam is completely out of her element with everything she does there while Arcanthus/Alkorin is the exact opposite. He thrives in the undercity and he's confident in his place in it. And somehow SOMEHOW these two manage to connect (thanks to Arc and his snooping, mostly) and make things work even when things are at their absolute worst.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Sam is new to Arthos and she desperately wants to put her past behind her, but Arthos isn't very kind to timid humans. She's floundering in a big way and Arc (who is the embodiment of confident flamboyance) steps in to make things better for her. They are different as two beings can be and when things happen THEY HAPPEN. (Also, aliens with non-standard parts are fantastic. *thumbs up*)

The downside of Arc swooping in is that bad things happen when the two of them end up on some bad guy's radar. Because, you know, Arc is confidently flamboyant and he doesn't know when to step back and stay in the shadows (something which his head of security laments repeatedly). (Speaking of whom, DRAK! You rock, man.)

In other words, Arc is over-the-top, Sam is understated, yet they work. The family Arc has built around him is awesome and the bad guys totally deserve every bit of destruction the crew rains down on them. *double thumbs up*
