Synopsis (Goodreads):
Cold-blooded kidnappers. Long-lost magic. When things get serious, she goes full Sherlock.

Ashira Cohen takes pride in being the only female private investigator in Vancouver. With her skills, her missing persons case should be a piece of cake.

She wasn’t counting on getting bashed in the skull, revealing a hidden tattoo and supernatural powers she shouldn’t possess.

Or the bitter icing on top: a spree of abductions and terrifying ghostly creatures on a deadly bender.

And don’t even get her started on the golems.

Reluctantly partnered with her long-time nemesis Levi, the infuriating leader of the magic community, Ash resolves to keep her focus on the clue trail and off their sexual tension because WTF is up with that?

But with a mastermind organization pulling strings from the shadows and Levi’s arrogance driving her to pick out his body bag, can Ash rescue the captives and uncover the truth or will the next blood spilled be her own?
Thoughts on Blood & Ash: Sometimes you're in the mood for some fast-paced urban fantasy and BOOM here we go. We're given magic, more than a little mayhem, and a (possibly) ill-advised hook-up with one of the most powerful men in Vancouver. Because learning you have abilities that would make most people weep in terror isn't enough to deal with, right?

Yeah, Ash is interesting. She's distrustful (thanks to her conman papa for instilling some hard to shake lessons early in life), snarky, and she's like a bulldog once she gets her teeth in something. She also suddenly found out she has magic after thinking she was mundane for her entire life. Which rattles her a little, to be honest.

Having to pair up with Levi, a man who puts her back up, elevates her sarcasm and snark to epic levels, AND who she might have a teeeeeny-tiny bit of sexual tension with, just makes things more interesting. Ash is like a time bomb waiting to go off and she just keeps digging herself deeper and deeper into a dangerous case. Which makes sense given how dogged she is. The lady isn't about to step aside if she can do something to help.

That said, she isn't reckless. Well, she is reckless, but it's a controlled type of reckless. When she realizes she has this heretofore unheard of ability, she works on trying to figure out how to control it. When she has to make a snap decision to follow a dangerous trail of breadcrumbs or let the bad guys get away with very bad things, she calls for backup. Well, she leaves messages for backup, but she does make the attempt to call and let them know what's going on.

All in all, there's a lot going on here. In a good way. A big magical world, a lot of possibly sinister machinations going on behind the scenes, some really messed up family dynamics, and a teeeeeeny-tiny bit of sexual tension. Pfft. Teeny-tiny. You'll barely notice it. (I'm lying. Ash and Levi generate some heat without ever touching one another.) *thumbs up*
