Synopsis (Goodreads):
A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy and Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that—that, I know how to do.
Thoughts on Sustained: Jake and Chelsea were...fun. They were fun. Jake's not anybody's idea of a family man/stand-up guy. HE doesn't even think of himself that way. He's in it for a good time and he's bluntly upfront about what he expects from the women he "dates". Chelsea really throws him for a loop. Suddenly he finds himself sliding into the roll of someone who takes care of others and...let's just say he doesn't hate it. Honestly, he's his own worst enemy, when it comes down to it, and he sees himself as not good enough for Chelsea.

On Chelsea's end, she's taken on the care and raising of her six nieces and nephews after her brother and sister in law are killed. She's overwhelmed, but she's also handling things. Well, for the most part. There are a few bumps along the way that put her in Jake's orbit and they work crazy well together. In fact, they have a darn good thing going until Jake tangles things up.

A heaping handful of kids, steamy moments whenever Jake and Chelsea can find a few kid-free minutes, drama, barf, and two people doing the best they could under extraordinary circumstances. Like I said, these two (and their newfound brood) were fun!
