Synopsis (Goodreads):
Brad Mendoza is an idiot. He knows it, and so does everyone else in the star nation of Prometheus. A promising naval career down the drain just because he accidentally killed 504 civilians. So, it's time for him to give up and accept a dead-end command on Persephone, the worst starship in the fleet. Until he meets the beautiful and cunning Jessica Lin, his new executive officer, who harbors a terrible secret of her own. Now, with an enemy warship four times their size bearing down on them, Brad's in a race to save Jessica and his stupid ship.Thoughts on The Worst Ship in the Fleet: I honestly don't know what to think about this book because Brad Mendoza was just a hot mess from beginning to end. BUT...he had a few moments. Yeah, he might be an idiot and he might be suffering from some serious depression while wallowing in his guilt, but he's not irredeemable. Probably.
But Brad Mendoza is an idiot. We'll just have to hope that he's the lucky kind.
Let's back up a bit, though. Brad Mendoza has been assigned to the ship everybody's glad to NOT be assigned to and he's at a pretty low point. He killed some civilians (accidentally) and his military career is in a decidedly downward spiral. He's depressed, painfully uncaring, and pretty much either drunk or hungover most of the time.
To say he makes a less than stellar impression on his new crew might be a bit of an understatement.
Being a guy with nothing to lose (I mean, he's already captaining the worst ship in the fleet, right?), he kinda sorta doesn't follow orders and suddenly he and his ship are in the middle of something a whole lot bigger than them. As in, an enemy excursion into their territory. Which is bad. Very bad.
An unwanted command, some orders that don't get followed, a crew that might not be as bad as Brad thinks (although some are!), and a plan that is...kinda unhinged, but if it works is it really? I guess Brad and crew will find out!
