Synopsis (Goodreads):
Erin tends bar at the last dive left in gentrified Red Hook, Brooklyn, where old-timers spin tales of the bar’s legacy and the waterfront’s crime-ridden past. Her boss, Jimmy, a real estate magnate responsible for much of the neighborhood’s shiny transformation, also has a story to share. Back when he was a struggling beat cop, two neglected boys introduced him to an ancient creature that made Jimmy’s dreams come true. Nightmares too. Erin doesn’t believe a word. The bar is her life. But this bar at the end of the world is also home to a deadly stowaway. And it’s looking for a new host.
Thoughts on Eerie Basin: Short stories tend to be hit or miss with me (what can I say except my brain wants more). I liked this one overall, but I didn't feel like we got into Erin's head, really, so when she crossed that line it wasn't the gut punch it might have been in a longer piece.

That said, the story was intriguing. Erin and Jimmy's plans show how easily a person can go from trying to make a difference to allowing horrible things to happen. After all, it's all to make things better, isn't it? What's one sacrifice when so many others will ultimately benefit from it? Erin's dreams might be a little smaller in scope than Jimmy's were (she wants to own the bar she's put so many years into, whereas Jimmy wanted to make things better in this neighborhood that teetered on the brink of collapse), but they both allowed bad things to happen in order to achieve that dream.

Enjoyable and the story itself worked in this shorter format, I'm just more of a novel (or short novel) reader.
