Synopsis (Goodreads):
Reunited, Ariq and Zenobia must journey over the red wall and make a desperate appeal to the one woman with enough power to halt the marauders’ plans—the Empress of Nippon.Thoughts on The Kraken King and the Crumbling Walls: *makes crazy eyes at everyone* Man, the buildup to this installment had the tension level ratcheted up into the red zone. Zenobia has agreed to get to know Ariq to see if they're compatible and their banter is ridiculously sweet. Meanwhile, the sexual tension side between the two of them has things ready to explode. In more ways than one.
But even the Kraken King cannot demand the attentions of an empress. Masked and quarantined, Ariq and Zenobia are forced to bide their time. Despite the fact that they are as physically close as two people can be, Zenobia is trying to keep the man she can’t help but love at a distance, terrified she’ll be hurt again. And all the while, the mysteries of the Living City grow around them…
AND IT IS GLORIOUS.
I adored Ariq's easy acceptance of so many of the quirks that make Zenobia Zenobia. He wants her to write because it makes her happy. He likes her strength and her quick mind. He cajoles her secrets out of her with his honesty. For her part, Zenobia sees the truth that she's built up walls around her heart and she's trying to let them down so she and Ariq have a chance together.
As much as I've moaned about having to wait for the next installment, I'm eyeballing the fact that there are only two left and I'm feeling the fear. WHAT WILL I DO WHEN IT'S OVER??? Iron Seas, I just can't quit you!
