Because of their age difference, Mal and Ryann both have some baggage they have to work through. Mal more than Ryann, to be honest. She knows she wants him and she's willing to have a go at it, but she's not sure he's interested. Whereas, Mal just doesn't see how a beautiful, young woman would want a grizzled loner.
But they do and it works and I always end up rooting for the gruff, burly artist who scares women with the size of his man parts. (MONSTER! YASSSSS!)
