Review: Embraced by Blood (Sweetblood #2) by Laurie London

Release date: June 21, 2011
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Alfonso Serrano is a hunted man. For months he's managed to elude the Darkbloods, vengeful foes who won't rest until he's dead. But he still craves one dangerous temptation: Lily DeGraff, the sexy Guardian agent he'll risk anything to protect.

Lily is a wanted woman. Her talent for tracking Sweet—a rare blood type that's addictive to vampires—makes her a prime target for enemy capture. Her only hope is the stealthy vampire operative who stole into her bed…then left her in despair. Danger aside, Lily won't let Alfonso near her heart again—until an irresistible hunger threatens to draw them back together… and into an assassin's snare.
My Thoughts:  I am fully aware that I have a soft spot for misunderstood, tortured men who try their hardest to protect their friends and family.  *sigh*  Alfonso totally embodies that sentence.  Totally.  He loves Lily but he can't put her in danger.  He feels tremendous guilt for his part in the deaths of his mother and father.  He's damaged, nearly broken, and it makes him irresistible.

I've really enjoyed the mythology set out in this series.  I like that the vampires feed off energy and blood.  I like that they have specialized skill sets.  I like that they can form these intense emotional bonds that transcend the physical.

As for Lily and Alfonso, they have some fabulous chemistry.  After his near death in book 1, after he told Lily that he didn't love her anymore, she was devastated.  She's managed to pull herself together and she's attempted to make a normal life for her and her daughter, but she feels his loss.  When they're forced to work together, the embers between them flare up again.

There's a lot that happens plot-wise that advances the overall arc: The Darkbloods are thinking outside the box as far as coming up with ways to procure Sweetbloods, the idea of blood-assassins and their accompanying tools of the trade are explored.  There's also some sweet setup for book 3.  I'm looking forward to that in a big, big way.
