Review: The First Days (As the World Dies: A Zombie Trilogy #1) by Rhiannon Frater

Synopsis (Goodreads):
The morning that the world ends, Katie is getting ready for court and housewife Jenni is taking care of her family. Less than two hours later, they are fleeing for their lives from a zombie horde.

Thrown together by circumstance, Jenni and Katie become a powerful zombie-killing partnership, mowing down zombies as they rescue Jenni's stepson, Jason, from an infected campground.

They find sanctuary in a tiny, roughly fortified Texas town.  There Jenni and Katie find they are both attracted to Travis, leader of the survivors; and the refugees must slaughter people they know, who have returned in zombie form.
My Thoughts: Whoa. There was this... and then the... yeah. Zombies. You either love them or you hate them.  I happen to love the suckers.  I love how brutal their world is.  I love how the fundamental fight for survival changes people.  I love how all the rules that govern society splinter and fall apart.  Beyond that, though, I love that there are those people who somehow make things work despite horrible, terrible, no good odds.

This book starts off with a bang and it doesn't let up.  Every time you think that you're going to be able to breathe something even more terrible happens.  Every time you think Jenni and Katie have caught a break, another roadblock rears its ugly head.  It's insane and incredible and I honestly couldn't get enough of it.

This book worked on a lot of levels for me.  First off, the sheer brutality of the dead eating everything they can get their hands on was both creepy and horrifying.  Secondly, the way Jenni and Katie dealt with this new and suddenly violent world felt very real.  Jenni shattered in the aftermath of what happened to her family and had to find a purpose again.  Katie took on the role of a leader because that was what was needed of her.  They both fell apart in very different ways and they both had to figure out how to deal with it.

Fast-paced, relentless, brutal and bloody, this book hit all my kinks as far as post-apocalyptic zombie horror goes.  The last line tells us that "The worst was yet to come..." and I'm wondering how things can get much worse for these poor survivors.  I will be reading the next in this series.

  1. I'm glad that you enjoyed this one! And I'm glad I sent it - it's much more a Kelly book than an Amanda one.

  2. I have a great weakness for zombies. Except in my own story. What's that about, anyway? I need to drag those zombies out of hiding and make them start gnawing on people.
