Review: Tricks of the Trade (Paranormal Scene Investigations #3) by Laura Anne Gilman

Synopsis (Goodreads):
When magic goes wrong, who are you going to call?

The name's Torres, Bonnie Torres, and I'm a paranormal scene investigator—rooting out the truth about crimes of magic. It's dangerous and boring and scary and fascinating. Though not everyone in the Cosa Nostradamus is happy we're around, which can make things…tricky.

Working two cases—looking into a murder for the NYPD, and a rich man's break-in—should be well within our abilities. But when things start getting weird in the Electric Apple, Private Unaffiliated Paranormal Investigations is stretched to the limits, trying to keep one step ahead and out of trouble. Add in rumors of a powerful creature gunning for us and it's not just our rep on the line this time—if we don't solve this case, everyone will suffer.

Fortunately, around here, when the going gets weird, the weird hire us.…
My Thoughts:  I really like these books.  I like Bonnie and her formerly wild ways.  I like Ben and his locked up emotions.  I like the Pups and their way with current.  I like the twists and turns, the unraveling and the shenanigans.  I just like these guys, okay? I like them.

Now, I'm a shipper at heart.  I want everyone to end up with someone.  It's a personality flaw that I've come to accept about myself.  Part of me wants Ben and Bonnie to throw caution to the wind and do something crazy and part of me loves the slow dance they're taking with one another as they learn about the Merge and what it ultimately means for the two of them.  I'm loving the buildup.  Don't get me wrong.  I'm loving the tension and the way they're trying not to let it affect their professional rapport.  I'm loving the sparks - both literal and figurative - they're setting off.  I just want them together RIDICULOUS amounts.  I'm so torn about this because I think it's written perfectly and I still want more from them.  I'm so greedy.

The cases the Pups are involved in this time range from a murder to a break-in.  With one mischief imp doing his best to stir up trouble thrown in for good measure.  Enough tantalizing clues are dropped about the future to keep me on the edge of my seat waiting breathlessly for more.

  1. Wait. Wanting everyone to end up with someone is a personality flaw? There's another one to add to my list.

  2. Yep. I 'ship like a ship on fire. Or something. No, that's not quite right.
Still, I have this need to find a romantic angle in every book I read. Even if there's no romance to be found. I'm flawed. I like it.
