Review: Ashes, Ashes by Jo Treggiari

Ashes, Ashes by Jo Treggiari
Synopsis (Goodreads):
A thrilling tale of adventure, romance, and one girl's unyielding courage through the darkest of nightmares.

Epidemics, floods, droughts--for sixteen-year-old Lucy, the end of the world came and went, taking 99% of the population with it. As the weather continues to rage out of control, and Sweepers clean the streets of plague victims, Lucy survives alone in the wilds of Central Park. But when she's rescued from a pack of hunting dogs by a mysterious boy named Aidan, she reluctantly realizes she can't continue on her own. She joins his band of survivors, yet, a new danger awaits her: the Sweepers are looking for her. There's something special about Lucy, and they will stop at nothing to have her.
My Thoughts: First and foremost, this was the first audiobook I've ever been able to sit through in its entirety and I must admit that I was smitten by it. Now, I won't discount the fact that I was stuck in a car with no radio station and I didn't have much choice in what I had available to listen to but... I ended up finishing up the last 15 minutes once I was done with the drive because I HAD TO KNOW how it ended.

Lucy's world is lonely, dark and terrifying. Every moment is spent surviving and Lucy has nearly forgotten what it's like to interact with others. Aidan's appearance in her life jars her and reminds her that there are other survivors outside her little bubble. When she joins one of the surviving encampments, she learns that some of the things she's believed to be the truth in this new world aren't the truth at all. With creepy bad guys, betrayal and secrets bubbling up left and right, Lucy has to figure out who to trust to protect herself and her new friends.

I really liked the darkness of the world and how bleak it was. The remnants of Lucy's old life that she clings to and the memories of before are in sharp contrast to her existence now. When Aidan arrives, he brings a certain softness to Lucy and he reminds her that there's more to living than just surviving.

While the story didn't begin to move quickly until midway through, it was fascinating and I was hooked. For my first audiobook, it was a winner.

  1. haha, I remember that. You had to go back out to your car and sit there until you finished the book.

The world was probably my favorite aspect of this book. It was...stark and scary.

    1. Well, I couldn't leave it without finding out what happened and my stupid speakers weren't working on my computer. It was tragic. TRAGIC!

  2. Oh, awesome! I love finding a good audiobook ... and don't worry -- I have also parked in the garage and listened for an additional, oh, 30 minutes to finish a book!

I might get this one with my next credit!
