Review: Last Kiss Goodnight by Gena Showalter

Last Kiss Goodnight (Otherworld Assassin #1) by Gena Showalter
Synopsis (Goodreads):
THE SWEETEST TEMPTATION…

Black ops agent Solomon Judah awakens caged and bound in a twisted zoo where otherworlders are the main attraction. Vika Lukas, the owner’s daughter, is tasked with Solo’s care and feeding. The monster inside him yearns to kill her on sight, even though she holds the key to his escape. But the human side of him realizes the beautiful deaf girl is more than she seems—she’s his.

THE ULTIMATE PRICE…

Vika endures the captives’ taunts and loathing, hoping to keep them alive even if she can’t free them. Only, Solo is different—he protects her. But as hostility turns to forbidden romance, his feelings for her will be used against him…and he’ll be put to a killer test.
My Thoughts: Not going to lie, I think I picked this book up for the cover. It's very eye-catching. Also, I like men in cages. What? Don't judge. I like to see them flex their manly muscles and break out. Anywho. I liked this book. There were several men in cages. One of them broke out. All was well. Randomly, I read the Young Adult Alien Huntress series recently and was pleasantly surprised to see characters from that pop up in this book. It added an extra layer to the plot that might not have been there if the Reading Gods hadn't aligned and allowed this fortuitous occurrence.

Usually I'm all about the hero in books like this but I really liked Vika and her willingness to not become a monster like her father. I thought the way she mangled phrases was hilarious. I liked that she found a way around what her father had done to her as punishment and she refused to cave to despair. I also loved that where everyone else saw an ugly monster when they looked at Solo, she saw a good man.

Having a little background with the Alien Huntress and Young Adult Alien Huntress series doesn't hurt (many of the alien types have been introduced before and it's nice seeing some old favorites pop in) but isn't necessary. Solo and Vika's story plays out nicely on its own and the aliens are given enough explanation that you can follow along with what they're capable of. I'm kinda, sorta, really interested in Solo's fellow soldiers and how they survived the event that placed Solo at the circus. I want to know. I WANT TO KNOW.

  1. After reading the disaster that was Wicked Nights I put this book at the bottom of my TBR pile. I LOVE Gena's Alien Huntress books. I never read YA & I even read the YA Alien books. I may have to give this one another look. How were the sex scenes? Did you know what was involved or were they very vague?

    1. I don't remember them being vague but it's been a month or two since I read it. I did like the crossover with the Alien Huntress series. Those AIR guys are TOUGH!

  2. I'm sucker for both hot guys in cages and deaf female leads. I told myself no more buying books this month... That held up for about five seconds...

  4. I just wasn't sure about this one. I read it but didn't love it. Hated all the abuse of our little main character. Despised the beginning and had to force myself to keep reading after what her father did.

But Vika was a great character and so was Solo.

    1. Yeah, her father was a sadistic douchecanoe. I liked that Vika was able to rise above what was done to her. I liked that she was fully aware of how easy it would be to fall into hatred and she fought against that.
