Synopsis (Goodreads):
When a half-demon baby puts Mackenzie Solomon’s life—and her job as a demon hunter—on the line, she can’t turn her back on the half-pint of evil. But ‘Junior’ is actually part of a trap to turn Mackenzie’s partner, Josh, and his extraordinary charming skills to the dark uses of the ancient, fallen Grigori, the angels once assigned to be Watchers over humanity. Is she going to have to make a choice about the men in her life?

Can a charmer talk his way out of his destiny?

Josh learned months ago that the bad blood in his demon hunting partner brings out a part of he can’t control—including his desire for her. With a prophecy out on him, he’s more than a little worried some of those bad things should stay buried. But is Mackenzie really the start of something bad—or could she be everyone’s salvation.

Can a couple of humans move heaven and hell?

Mackenzie’s bosses at The Endowment—the place responsible for keeping the peace between heaven and hell—want her to bring in the baby demon and not for anything good. With the Endowment after her and demons to stop, Mackenzie knows she’s on her own.

But she’s going to have to learn to trust Josh—and to use what’s sparking between them. Because it's going to take the kind of love that bonds souls forever to keep the world from ending.
My Thoughts: I liked this book. I'm saying that first so that when I say that it took a while for me to fall into the characters' heads, you won't think that means I didn't enjoy the book. Because I did. I liked how twisted the politics were at The Endowment. I liked that you never quite knew who to trust -- or who was going to pop in and stab someone in the back next. I liked all that. But I took a while to warm up to Mackenzie and Josh.

Why is that? Well, there's a lot of repression and hidden truth in their relationship. And when I say "hidden truth", I mean that Josh kept some pretty big secrets from Mackenzie regarding his past. I get *why* he did it but at the same time, it makes for a rocky relationship. Meanwhile, Mackenzie isn't exactly an open book either. There are plenty of things she hasn't shared with Josh. As closely as they work together, you'd think some of these secrets would have trickled out before, accidentally or otherwise. Alas, no. They were both sewn up as tight as a drum.

Now, I wouldn't be me if I didn't mention the simmering sexual tension. Seriously, I'm surprised these two didn't self-combust AGES ago. Not that the sexual tension is bad but it was so all-consuming for both of them that it makes up a big part of their personalities and relationship. Seriously, the sexual tension was awesome. It was UNF to an almost overwhelming degree. Again, not bad. Sexual tension=good. *thumbs up*

There's a lot of world here. WAY more than we got to see up close. Which is cool and has my mind spinning off in a million different directions as I imagine all the places these characters can take us. Both Mackenzie and Josh are changed by what they went through in this book and I imagine that it'll have big repercussions in the future.

Like I said, I liked the book and I'm intrigued enough to see where book 2 takes them.

  1. I'm a little unnerved by that cover, but the book does sound intriguing.
