Synopsis (Goodreads):
October "Toby" Daye, changeling knight in the service of Duke Sylvester Torquill, finds the delicate balance of her life shattered when she learns that an old friend is in dire trouble. Lily, Lady of the Tea Gardens, has been struck down by a mysterious, seemingly impossible illness, leaving her fiefdom undefended. Struggling to find a way to save Lily and her subjects, Toby must confront her own past as an enemy she thought was gone forever raises her head once more: Oleander de Merelands, one of the two people responsible for her fourteen-year exile.Thoughts on Late Eclipses: I've been really really REALLY enjoying the progression of Toby's character through the books. The lady was kinda a hot mess in book 1 and she's working through her problems admirably. That said, I didn't expect this book to move HER forward as much as it did. Honestly, I expected her to butt heads with Tybalt and grudgingly do her knightly duty and probably end up bleeding a lot. But Toby surprised me. Every book has her finding a little more of her footing and ... I like it. I like how she's taking charge of her life even when things go crazy.
Time is growing short and the stakes are getting higher, for the Queen of the Mists has her own agenda. With everything on the line, Toby will have to take the ultimate risk to save herself and the people she loves most—because if she can't find the missing pieces of the puzzle in time, Toby will be forced to make the one choice she never thought she'd have to face again...
Does that make sense? She still takes insanely dangerous risks, but by the end of this book she didn't feel like she was walking the razor's edge where she'd just chuck it all given half a chance.
Plus...WHOA, THOSE REVELATIONS. Things happen in this book, guys. THINGS. Things I don't think I have a full grasp on yet. Heck, I don't think Toby completely understands how these things will affect her.
And since events are always in motion in Toby's world, I'm both giddy and scared over what the next book will bring. (Mostly giddy, though. I want to dive into it more of the crazy like your wouldn't believe.)
No lie, I expected to enjoy this series when I picked it up (or else why would I have bothered, right?), but I didn't expect it to drag me back into full-blown UF obsession. Toby did it and she did it well.
