Synopsis (Goodreads):
A pair of ritual murders could expose Mercy Kilpatrick to something terrifying: her own past…

Raised off the grid by survivalists, Mercy Kilpatrick believed in no greater safeguard than the backwoods of Oregon. Unforgiven by her father for abandoning the fold for the FBI, Mercy still holds to her past convictions. They’re in her blood. They’re her secrets—as guarded as her private survival retreat hidden away in the foothills.

In a cabin near her hideaway, Mercy encounters a young girl whose grandmother is dying from multiple knife wounds. Hundreds of miles away, a body is discovered slashed to death in a similar way. The victims—a city judge and an old woman living in the woods—couldn’t be more different. With the help of police chief Truman Daly, Mercy must find the killer before the body count rises. Mercy knows that the past has an edge on her. So does her family. How can she keep her secrets now…when they’re the only things that can save her?
Thoughts on A Merciful Secret: Mercy's back. Well, she actually never left, but she's back in the thick of things. Sort of. I mean, she gets pulled into a crime scene which means she's out of the investigation, but that doesn't stop her curiosity and desire to find justice.

And, you know, to uncover secrets.

Which she does. Magnificently.

On top of the investigation, Mercy's also dealing with her family. And by that, I mean she's trying to be a mother to her teenage niece and support her sister, Rose. Oh, and reestablish lines of communication with her father. That last part is slow going. Very slow.

Plus, there's Truman. Mercy's so used to going it alone that she has a hard time opening up to ANYONE. Truman's been a trooper giving her the time and space to figure things out, but it's tough on him, too. He sees a future with Mercy she's not quite ready to face and that makes things a little rocky sometimes.

I'm enjoying Mercy and the dangers she faces off against in her quest to solve her cases. She's taken a  few hits recently, but she's the type who bounces back. Especially when she has a solid crew at her back.
