Watt and Bothered

Date read: May 14, 2023
Fiona DavenportAmazon
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Having his beloved home town turn monstrous overnight was rough for Silas Adler. Even more difficult was finding out that he suddenly had the power to channel electricity...at the expense of being able to touch anyone.

Two decades later, he was stunned when Juniper Finch stumbled into his arms without being hurt. It was a lucky thing since Silas knew at first glance that Juniper was meant to be his.
Thoughts on Watt and Bothered: Okay. We're heading into Screaming Woods where wild things happen and "monsters" are the norm. First up, Silas and Juniper.

For the past 20 years, Silas has been dealing with being unable to touch anyone thanks to his electric powers. Or however you want to put it. The guy hands out shocks with a touch and after accidentally killing someone (no worries, they were revived!), he's resigned himself to never being able to touch anyone again.

Then Juniper comes along. She's sweet, beautiful, and apparently immune to his ability. Which opens up a chance for romance for the big guy.

On Juniper's end, she has some pretty awful parents who don't see her at all. Finding someone who thinks the sun rises and sets with her is pretty awesome and soon she and Silas are getting busy planning their futures. Because when you've got these kind of sparks, you have to go for it, amirite?!?!

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Date read: May 14, 2023

Synopsis (Goodreads):
Screaming Woods, where the monster dwell… and love goes to die.

Or at least it feels that way. Because finding love isn't easy when you're green. Thanks to a mad scientist and his potion spiked punch, I’m a lovely shade of chartreuse and my scary reputation for being obsessed with sparkly shoes proceeds me.

I'd given up on love until my dark knight literally rode in on a big, black horse. The spark was instantly there, the only thing missing— his head.

For once, someone saw me as more than the Wicked Witch, but that might have something to do with him being headless after sundown.

The Headless Horseman could be the one to break my dry spell of loneliness, but first I have to break it to him that he’s worthy of love to. And I’m going to do that by showing just how wicked I can be.

He could be the one to break my dry spell, I just need to show him how good it feels to be wicked.
Thoughts on Something Wicked This Way Comes: It's Silas's sister's turn to find love and Maggie is hooking up with the headless horseman. Kind of. I mean, Eli IS headless part of the time and he does ride a horse, but he's not THE headless horseman. He's just a headless guy (after dark) who happens to ride a horse.

Anywho. Eli and Maggie. After the situation that changed them happened twenty years ago, the two of them went their separate ways. Not by choice, really, but rather because they were both dealing with their new circumstances. As it also turns out, neither wanted to bear being rejected if the other couldn't handle the new them.

So they kept apart and neither was happy. Then their paths cross and all those pre-monster feelings were still there no matter whether they had a head or what color their skin was. Which is excellent because this is a romance book. Soon the two are hooking up and knocking it out of the park. So to speak.

His Heartbeat

Date read: May 15, 2023

Synopsis (Goodreads):
Zombies need love too…

Atticus

I’ve been dead for nearly two decades. Or rather, undead. Being a zombie is not like in the movies; I don’t shuffle, and I absolutely don’t eat brains.I look different than I used to and I feel nothing. No happiness, no sadness, no anger, I am a flatline of emotion. Until her… Vivian Cane. I hunger for her in a way that defies logic. Every moment I spend with her changes me. Every touch, every kiss makes me feel human again. I don’t deserve her, but I’m going to do whatever I can to convince the curvaceous beauty that we belong together.

Vivian

I’ve been a horror writer for a few years so I know my monsters. Research brings me to the town rumored to be riddled with “real” monsters. I don’t expect anything, but some quiet writing time. What I get is chased by a feral creature and then saved by… a zombie? Atticus Hunt might not look like a normal man, but he’s more humane than any guy I’ve ever known. Being with him makes me feel alive in a way I’ve never felt. But am I ready to risk it all to live in a world I always thought was make believe?
Thoughts on His Heartbeat: The zombie and the horror writer. He's just trying to live with the situation he's been allotted. She's looking for inspiration. She doesn't exactly expect the type of inspiration that ends up chasing her through the woods OR the sexy zombie who rescues her, but she's surprisingly okay with all of it.

Especially the sexy zombie part.

On Atticus's end, he's gone sort of emotionally flat since he was changed. Not much stirs him and he's okay with that. Mostly because he doesn't have it in him to be bothered. Then he hears Vivian scream and suddenly he REALLY starts caring. About her. About her safety. About how he can romance the heck out of her.

As for Vivian, the inhabitants of Screaming Woods might be a bit of a surprise, but she's cool with it. After all, she was rescued by a zombie from a mothman who had nefarious plans for her and the zombie makes her FEEL things. Sexy things. Also like maybe she wouldn't mind putting down roots. So she goes with it and soon the zombie and the horror writer are an item. AS ONE EXPECTS!

Now You See Me

Date read: May 15, 2023
Karla Doyle - Website | Amazon
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Elise wishes she were invisible. Roan wishes he wasn’t.

ROAN

At eighteen, I was a young man winning the game of life. I had a college football scholarship and a cute girlfriend on my arm for my hometown’s annual Halloween party. Forget spiking the punch. The eccentric old scientist who lives in the woods brewed something more potent… and permanently life-altering.

Twenty years later, I’m not a man, I’m a monster. Invisibility isn’t the superpower people think it is. It’s a curse. A condition I wouldn’t wish on anyone, and since the crazy old scientist doesn’t know how I got this way, or if I can spread it to others, I’m not just destined to be unseen, I’m also going to be alone. That’s how it has to be.

Until the night I post a grumpy “In Search Of” ad, and get a single reply. I don’t know why Elise agreed to my self-serving demands of complete visual anonymity, but my life was instantly fuller because she did. I don’t have to see her to fall for her. But I know it can never be more than long-distance feelings and inspiration for my right hand.

Until the day Elise surprises me by breaking our anonymity agreement and shows up in my coffee shop… and gets a monstrous surprise in return.

ELISE

People can claim otherwise, but appearances matter. I learned that after an accident left one side of my face heavily scarred. I’m used to the staring. The pointing and whispering. Kids asking their parents if I’m a monster. I’m also used to being alone, because the dating pool dried up the day I lost half my beauty.

I was searching job listings the night I found Roan’s “In Search Of” post. It’s been years since I read a singles ad, and I still don’t know why I did. Call it coincidence, fate, or the universe doing something to balance the scales. It was as if Roan wrote that ad for me.

Every day since has been better than the one before it. My friends think Roan must be a hideous ogre to be hiding behind his “no pictures, no contact” rule. I don’t care what he looks like. Roan and I click in every way–and I do mean every. He doesn’t need to touch me in person to satisfy me. But I’d like him to.

Six months after agreeing to his conditions, I want to break them. I’m ready to take the biggest risk of my life–rejection by the man I love. I want all of Roan Byrne. The good, the sexy, and if he does turn out to be an ogre, the ugly. I only hope that when he sees me, he feels the same way…
Thoughts on Now You See Me: Next up in our Screaming Woods adventures is a man who's a little bit invisible (okay, a lot invisible) and a woman who tries to keep her scars hidden. Roan can't imagine there's a woman out there who wouldn't mind his inability to be seen. Elise can't imagine there's anyone who could overlook her scars.

GUESS WHAT? These two work nicely together. After a six month stretch of getting to know one another via chat and by phone, Elise takes the plunge and heads to Screaming Woods to see about a face to face meeting. Sure, it's against their rules and she's very much afraid Roan will reject her once he sees her scars, but she's putting herself out there because she feels like it's something she needs to do.

On Roan's end, he's thrown for a loop when Elise shows up at his coffee shop. It takes some wise words from his employee to get him moving in the right direction. Which is toward Elise, in case it wasn't clear.

No joke, I'm enjoying my time spent in this town with these monsters.

Knot Running From Fate

Date read: May 15, 2023
Ember Davis - Website | Amazon
Synopsis (Goodreads):
JACE
In the years since everything changed in Screaming Woods, including myself, the only place I’ve found solace is in the woods I protect as a park ranger. I’m not sure how to deal with my new…attributes as a wolfman. What if I go feral? What if I can’t control the monster I was made into?

Every year this goes on, I retreat farther from humanity and closer to the animal I’ve become. I don’t get close to anyone, which is for the best. I’m destined to be alone now; at least that’s what I assumed. Until I meet Dakota.

Dakota moves to town to open a gourmet pet treat business, but I know there is more to the story. I didn’t know I had a future beyond being a monster. Fate has given me something else—her, my mate. Now I’ll do anything to keep her safe and make her mine, even accept the monster I’ve become.

DAKOTA
When looking for a place to open a brick-and-mortar store for the business I run with my best friend, I wanted to take the opportunity to move far away. My ex is obsessed with me and not in a dark romance kind of way, more in a creepy, scary, restraining order kind of way. Something was calling me to Screaming Woods, so I took a chance.

Opening Paws Up is going well. The town is welcoming and a little odd. Just the way I like things. I’ll be able to build a new, safe life here. I’ll be able to stay out of trouble and focus on the business.

Then Jace growls his way into my life. He’s a wolfman who loves nature and takes offense to my business, though I can’t understand why. It’s not like I’d suggest he try my treats…unless he wanted to. I have a lot to learn about Screaming Woods and the monster whose fate is entwined with mine. Hopefully my past won’t come back to haunt me and try and take it all away from me. Even if it does, I’m knot running from fate.
Thoughts on Knot Running From Fate: The wolfman and the lady looking to find a place for her new business are up and WOLFMAN! I do enjoy the wolfmen!

Anywho. Jace and Dakota. He's still working on coming to terms with what he's become. Considering twenty years have passed since that fateful Halloween night, Jace is carrying a lot of baggage. BUT...he does start to realize that maybe he's exactly where he needs to be in the form that can best protect Dakota. It just takes a lot of time and a sassy human woman who's a little skittish to reach that point.

As for Dakota, she's working on setting up her storefront, she's kinda taken with the growly wolfman hanging around, and she just might have an ex who is bad, bad news. Fortunately for her, Jace is ALL ABOUT keeping her safe, so that bad, bad ex isn't as big a deal as he might have been.

Here's to more monsters finding love in all the right places in Screaming Woods!

A Bride for the Beast

Date read: May 16, 2023

Fern Fraser - Website | Amazon
Synopsis (Goodreads):
DRAVEN
I've spent my life in darkness, hidden away from the world.
It's where monsters belong after all, isn't it?
But my curvy maid, Dahlia, brings more than just order to my world.
She brings me back to life and makes me want more.
My beastly appearance doesn't scare her. Nothing does.
Except, perhaps, the father she's running from.
But I won't give her up for any man. This beauty is all mine.

DAHLIA
I spent my life fighting my strict father and his outdated opinions about right and wrong.
Accepting a housekeeping job in another state is a way of proving I can stand on my own two feet.
The moment we meet, Draven’s tail sweeps me off them and straight into his arms.
I've never met anyone with more heart and humanity than the sexy, blue-haired giant.
In my father's eyes, Draven is a monster, not a man, but I'm determined to prove him wrong.
This Bride is claiming her Beast.
Thoughts on A Bride for the Beast: It's time for the so-called beast and his sweet, but VERY determined human to find their happy place. Draven and Dahlia might start out dancing around one another (sort of literally, at one point), but they figure things out. Eventually.

First, Draven. The big guy is day-blind and slightly smitten with the new maid his mother brought in to help around the house (which is pretty much a castle, tbh). Given that he's a monster and she's human, he does his best to stay out of sight because he can't imagine how someone as beautiful as Dahlia could ever want someone as monstrous as him.

Joke's on him, because Dahlia REALLY like the horns and blue hair and tail Draven is rocking. In fact, not only does she like him, she feels safe in his home and with him and his mother. She might be only human, but she's not going to let someone as perfect for her as Draven slip through her fingers.

It takes a little time and a chase through the woods, but the lady and the beast figure things out. OH YEAH.
