Synopsis (Goodreads):
When one of Momar's grunts breaks into Austin's territory looking to grab Jessie for questioning, Jessie and her crew realize they are under fire. In order to protect themselves, it becomes obvious they need backup.

Thankfully, the basajaun's people have invited Jessie and her crew into the basajaunak lands. This is their golden opportunity to seek their help.

The problem is, a host of mages and mercenaries are following them. Once they take Jessie this time it won't be just for questioning, and she won't be coming back.

To omit this detail to the basajaunak would result in punishment. And everyone knows "punishment" with basajaunak is synonymous with an unmarked grave. But to tell them would get their visit canceled and force them to face the threat alone. Either way could mean certain death.

Decisions, decisions.
Thoughts on Magical Midlife Challenge: It's been a while since I dipped my toes in Jessie's world and I'd forgotten how very ODD her people are. Sure, their chaotic oddness is probably the biggest thing that gives their enemies pause, but MAN they are all over the place, aren't they? Chaos gremlins, for sure. Which isn't to be confused with the infestation of gnomes Ivy House is currently experiencing, which is another story for another time.

So. Things are heating up on the enemy front. Jessie and crew need to worry about protecting the good guys (the shapeshifters, Austin's brother and his people, and all the innocents that could be caught in the crossfire), while their enemies aren't quite as concerned about casualties of any variety.

In other words, Jessie and her people have to plan and move carefully (given their chaotic tendencies, this isn't always as easy as it seems) while cultivating allies where they can. So a trek to the woods to meet up with the basajaun's people carries a lot of potential problems if their enemies attack.

A whole lot of chaos, an invigorating hike through the woods, a battle, and a chance for Jessie to start melding her two halves. *thumbs up*
