Synopsis (Goodreads):
It was a rescue mission. Failing wasn't an option. But neither was falling--in love.Thoughts on Into the Ikfal: We're back on the planet that's translated name is "Certain Death" and YEAH. This planet doesn't mess around. Grace is the first of the four-woman crew to head out and find her missing WarGuard and she has to deal with a predatory flying avian not long after they get their boots on the ground. (Did I mention an organism in the atmosphere will slowly kill them? Because YEAH, even the AIR wants them dead.)
When the artificial intelligence VELMA selected me for a risky rescue mission on Planet Ikthe, I had one of two options: take this opportunity to explore a new planet, use some skills, and change the course of my future; or stay on the retreating fleet ship Lucidity and keep the dingy and isolated Warp Mechanics bay running until I retired. Okay, it wasn't much of a contest. As an Advance Resource Assessment team flunkie, I'd always wanted to explore distant planets. This was my chance, and I was taking it!
VELMA warned me of the danger, but she assured me I had what it took to get the job done. She didn't tell me the Theraxl warriors were seven feet of chiseled muscle and sharpened fangs, or that they had the possibility of developing a permanent heart condition triggered by a special someone. When that special someone turned out to be me, I didn't know what it meant for Mazaquo, the hunky alien warrior I rescued, and I sure as hell didn't know what it meant for me. Just because I was ready for a change didn't mean I was ready for a heart mate! Or did it?
So. Grace gets snatched by a big, smelly bird and she finds the warrior she needs to rescue in its nest. Her first obstacle is convincing the warrior she's not a hallucination. Let's just say Mazaquo has had a ROUGH time of things since the world shook and swallowed him (literally) and he's not out of the woods yet. Her second obstacle, facing her fear of heights and getting both her and Mazaquo onto the ground.
From there, it's just a matter of finding drinkable water, avoiding everything that wants to kill them (which is everything), and protecting Mazaquo when he needs her most. Which she does. Admirably.
The entire PP series is very fun and I LOVE being able to revisit this planet that is certain death for anyone who lets their guard down. What can I say? Dangerous situations where two people find their special someone are my thing!
