Synopsis (Goodreads):
RoryThoughts on Echo: The Sniper: Oh my goodness, this book was goooood. From Rory trying to figure out how to rebuild her life after a terrible couple of years (capped by a deeply traumatizing event in its own right) to Echo trying to figure out how to give Rory the space to grow while also keeping her safe. Just, yes. I'm here for it.
I endured three years of marital hell with a man my dying father handpicked for me to marry, only to become a prisoner in my own home. Then he was assassinated right in front of me, and I’d foolishly thought I was free from all the chaos and violence. But months later, as I stood barefoot on an icy sidewalk watching my house burn down, I realized that for some people—okay, me—life was just one craptastic event after another.
That was, until he showed up.
Echo
Like most snipers worth their salt, I was born to be a lone wolf. The few friends I have—my chosen family at Private Security International—totally get this and accept my borderline-antisocial ways. I always thought I’d grow old alone, but then something happened. I saw her. Head bowed. Eyes haunted. Soul shattered. I needed to go to her. Tell her she wasn’t alone anymore. Promise she was safe. Only she wasn’t safe. Someone was trying to kill her, but they hadn’t counted on me, the deadliest man at PSI, standing in their way. Nothing was going to take her away from me… except my own dark secrets.
So. Rory is in a bad place when she first encounters Echo. Her house is burning down, she's mentally worn out, and she's holding on only because she has no other choice. Echo's help is unexpected and it sort of throws her. It also gives her a chance to breathe and start to find herself after the chaos of the last three years. Still, years of abuse don't vanish overnight and Rory is wary. Of him. Of life. Of everything, really. But Echo is strong and patient and being with him allows her feel safe even if it's only for a while.
On Echo's end, he's in a tough spot. He's been smitten with Rory from the first time he laid eyes on her and knowing what she went through is difficult. The more she lets slip about her marriage, the more he grows to hate the man she'd been married to. That said, for all he wants to do things right, he makes a few mistakes along the way. Owning up to those mistakes isn't a problem for him, but Rory's already heartsore and slow to give her trust and those mistakes poke at the wounded places inside her.
It takes time, patience, and a whole lot of grit and forgiveness before these two end up where they need to be.
A couple well-intentioned omissions, a boatload of money, betrayal, serious family dysfunction, a man who can't walk away, and a lady who is learning who she is again. Or maybe for the first time. Regardless, these two are complicated and they have to trust one another before they can find their happily ever after.
