Review: Beyond Control by Kit Rocha

Beyond Control (Beyond #2) by Kit Rocha
Synopsis (Goodreads):
She refuses to be owned.

Alexa Parrino escaped a life of servitude and survived danger on the streets to become one of the most trusted, influential people in Sector Four, where the O’Kanes rule with a hedonistic but iron fist. Lex has been at the top for years, and there’s almost nothing she wouldn’t do for the gang…and for its leader. Lie, steal, kill—but she bows to no one, not even Dallas O’Kane.

He’ll settle for nothing less.

Dallas fought long and hard to carve a slice of order out of the chaos of the sectors. Dangers both large and small threaten his people, but it’s nothing he can’t handle. His liquor business is flourishing, and new opportunities fuel his ambition. Lex could help him expand his empire, something he wants almost as much as he wants her. And no one says no to the king of Sector Four.

Falling into bed is easy, but their sexual games are anything but casual. Attraction quickly turns to obsession, and their careful dance of heady dominance and sweet submission uncovers a need so deep, so strong, it could crush them both.
My Thoughts: Holy smokes! I would recommend this book based off of the six-way sexcapades alone but this book is SO MUCH MORE than just the sex. It full of dark, conflicted characters who strive to do the right thing in a chaotic, dangerous world. It has heart and hatred, pain and forgiveness all rolled around the lives of these people who aren't afraid to give in to their urges to dominate and obey and love like the world might end tomorrow. It's intense. It's gripping. It's a world that I have a hard time shaking once I've finished the book.

And Dallas and Lex are at the heart of Sector Four. They've been pushing and pulling on each other for years. It was only a matter of time before something ended up giving and they had to face their feelings for one another. Their relationship isn't pretty or neat - it's full of hard words and sharp knives quite often. But these two thrive off of the conflict. Dallas enjoys making Lex submit to him and she likes pushing him by digging in her heels. It's complicated and messy and sometimes the things they do cut to the bone in ways they can't anticipate. Watching them figure things out was absolutely spellbinding.

I ADORE the people that populate this world. Revisiting Noelle and Jas and seeing how she has blossomed from the frightened girl who was cast out of the city and happened to fall down at a dangerous smuggler's feet was so fun. Bren and Ace and Mad are the fists and the poetry and the intelligence gatherers. They help Dallas hold his territory and they're incredibly loyal to him. I am ridiculously excited for the next books.

The world is dark, the characters never take the easy path, and the emotion boils up from every page. In other words, I am so very in love with this series.

  1. This does sound super edgy which is just right up your alley! I kind of like it when the author is just very emotionally draining in their writing when it fits the story. Some characters just wouldn't fit the easy path.

    1. Oh, man. These characters couldn't take the easy path if it was sitting there punching them in the face. They fight hard and play hard and it WORKS!
