Synopsis (Goodreads):
Riley Thorn and her hot, tattooed, private investigator boyfriend are all moved into their new fixer upper. Not only do they finally have their own home, they also haven’t found any new dead bodies on the premises.Thoughts on Riley Thorn and the Blast from the Past: The reluctant psychic and the growly PI. HA. These two. They get into more ridiculous/dangerous situations in a week than most people do in a lifetime and THEY ARE SO PERFECT FOR ONE ANOTHER.
Yep. It looks like summer is over and so is Riley’s bad luck. Or is it?
While Nick gives up sleeping and showering to obsess over the cold case that still haunts him, his business partner Mrs. Penny is calling the investigative shots. It’s every bit as bad as you can imagine.
Meanwhile, Riley has her hands full fixing up the crumbling crime scene they call home and setting boundaries with the breaking-and-entering octogenarians next-door. You know. Normal stuff.
But normal comes to a screeching halt when our favorite psychic is abducted by a stranger with candy and Riley’s powers go on the fritz. Stranger danger gets even more dangerous when the bad guys come knocking with a severed finger and a warning for their new house guests who are definitely either in trouble or are trouble. Maybe both.
Can Riley and Nick solve the case the old-fashioned way before they all end up in pieces? Or will a surprise birthday party, a dog doody bandit, accidental arson, and a blast from the past be too much to handle?
I mean, Riley puts up with Nick's over the top protective instinct and his tendency to bark out orders when he gets stressed (said stress usually being caused by Riley putting herself in danger in some way, shape, or form) and Nick puts up with Riley's inability to physically keep herself out of danger. They both go a little feral when the other is threatened and they REALLY like to maul one another (in a sexy way) at the most inopportune moments.
If that wasn't enough, they're surrounded by a cast of characters even weirder than they are. I honestly believe the psychic and the rule-subbing PI are the most normal of the group. Well, I mean Kellen's a little normal, but he's really into following the rules which doesn't seem normal AT ALL when compared to the others around them. (Also, drunk Kellen is hilarious. HAHAHA. That guy.)
Glitter, big hair, a food-snarfing dog, octogenarians who are living their best lives, a party that pushes the bounds of decency, primo cases, and a murder-house that's shaping up slowly but surely. Riley and Nick took on a crumbling monstrosity and are mostly whipping it into shape. Well, Riley mostly, but that's because Nick gets a little obsessive when it comes to his cases at times.
