Who says monsters can’t fall in love? In Screaming Woods, anything is possible. Welcome back to the little town turned monstrous by a party potion gone wrong.

Valkyrie's Choice

Date read: May 19, 2023
Fiona DavenportAmazon
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Being turned into a Valkyrie put a crimp in a girl's dating plans, even when the rest of the town was full of monsters.

Isla Hart figured the odds of finding her happily ever after were slim when she sprouted wings…until she saved Cooper Madison’s life and couldn’t get him out of her head. Too bad he was human, and it wasn’t as though she’d ever see him again anyway.

Unable to pilot planes after an accident, Cooper was in search of somewhere to figure out what came next. When he rented a cabin near where his plane had gone down, he never expected to run into the woman he thought was a figment of his imagination. Or that he’d fall head over heels in love with her.
Thoughts on Valkyrie's Choice: We're back in Screaming Woods with a Valkyrie and a human and they're both have a few things they need to work through. Isla doesn't think anybody would want since she's a monster (which is weird, really, because most of the folks in town are monsters, but there you go) and Cooper is dealing with losing enough of his vision that he's unable to fly anymore AND wondering if the winged beauty who saved him was only in his imagination.

As it turns out, Isla wasn't imaginary and Cooper REALLY likes her wings. So both those issues were dealt with pretty handily. Cooper's vision, on the other hand, takes a little something extra to deal with. And by "something extra" I mean he's given a hand by the local wicked witch who really isn't all that wicked when it comes down to it.

A little flying, a little sexy times during flying, a lady who guards her heart, and a man who finds the person he's been searching for. *thumbs up*

Demon's Own

Date read: May 20, 2023
Rochelle Paige - Website | Amazon
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Living in a town turned monstrous didn't leave much hope for finding love, especially when you unexpectedly wound up with horns and flames swirling in your eyes.

Koen Kelly didn’t think he’d find a ray of sunshine to ever break through his grumpiness. Then he met Soraya Lovejoy.

The pretty author wasn’t afraid of much except for her looming deadline. She needed inspiration for her next paranormal romance, and staying in a place with real monsters seemed like the perfect way to get it. Only she never expected to find her own happily ever after with one of them.
Thoughts on Demon's Own: This time we have a demon and a paranormal romance author and they figure things out pretty quickly. And by that I mean they pretty much jump into the sexy times because OH YEAH.

Seriously, though, Soraya isn't bothered by Koen's horns or funky eyes. In fact, she kind of likes both. A lot. As for Koen, he's pretty much smitten with the lovely author from the moment she stumbled into his fishing hole. Which is not a euphemism for anything. He was fishing. She showed up. THINGS HAPPENED.

Well, the things happening wasn't RIGHT away. I mean, they went on a coffee date first. Then THINGS HAPPENED. As a bonus, they had to deal with Soraya's agent and the things she'll do to ensure Soraya's next book is a hit. Plus, there's the whole demon thing. Not the Koen-demon thing. The other demon thing.

Look. THINGS HAPPEN. Not all of them are of the sexy variety. *thumbs up*

Turnabout is Fairy Play

Date read: May 21, 2023
Andie Fenichel - Amazon
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Lorenzo

I rarely eat the food at my upscale Italian restaurant. Vampires need blood, not pasta. I crave the hunt, but I’m not a killer. A lady-killer, yes. There’s something about the vampire in me that lures women. The only woman immune to my allure is my dearest and oldest friend, Lily. She helped me survive my transition to vampirism, despite also becoming a monster of sorts. Kind and full of life, Lily is everything I’m not. My unbeating heart wants more than friendship with the fairy, but I’m afraid to ruin our friendship. Besides, what would she want with a broody vampire?

Lily

As a fairy, people rarely take me seriously. With my glow and wings, I understand why they look at me and think of Tinker Bell, not Aristotle, but the degree I’m working toward will prove them wrong. As if by some miracle, I think I may finally have a boyfriend, too. He’s not the man I really want, but my vampire friend Lorenzo is off-limits. Besides, a human boyfriend may be a better choice since every woman in town isn’t chasing him. If only my heart would accept that Lorenzo isn’t the man for me…
Thoughts on Turnabout is Fairy Play: I didn't dislike this one, but there was a lot of back and forthing between Lorenzo and Lily even after they'd basically laid all their respective cards on the table. I kind of just wanted them to trust that the other one actually listened to them declaring themselves and not fret about it as much as they did.

On the other hand, that might have made the book too short. So I guess L&L needed to have their sad moments where they thought their love was unrequited. Plus, Lorenzo needed to get all growly over Lily's kind-of date. Or, they guy she was sort of seeing. Or however you want to put it. Regardless, Lorenzo didn't care for Lad and he thought Lily could do way better than that guy.

Spoiler: He was right. Because the right guy was him.

Throw in a little danger, a couple of growly moments for Lorenzo, the town having Lily's back, and a lot of longing looks. Good stuff.

A Monster Worth Fighting For

Date read: May 22, 2023
Ava Ross - Website | Amazon
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Grumpy, growly wyverns don’t deserve true love—or do they?

I’ve worked hard to accept what happened after I sipped that strange brew and turned into a wyvern. Scaly skin? It protects me from the weather. Wings? Flying’s cool. And the claws on my thumbs make it easier to craft chainsaw wood sculptures.

But then Nettie, a too-adorable woman with curves that go on forever and long hair the color of the sunset, arrives on my doorstep.

She insists we were married by proxy. Thanks for asking me to sign those papers, Mom.

When a freakish storm hits the area, we’re stuck together trying to figure this out. Did I mention my log cabin only has one bed?

My lonely heart keeps insisting I should keep her, but what woman wants to be a wyvern’s bride?
Thoughts on A Monster Worth Fighting For: A grumpy, scowly wyvern (who also happens to be growly, so really he's a grumpy, scowly, growly wyvern) is up and the lady who captures his attention is a human who wants nothing more than to belong to him.

All things considered, Ryett doesn't make it easy for Nettie. I mean, the guy REALLY fights his attraction to her. He does this by scowling as much as possible and growling to keep her at arm's length. Joke's on him, though, because Nettie likes those growls and she thinks he's a hottie whether he's scowling or not.

On Nettie's end, she's determined to forge her own path when it comes to her future and marrying a wyvern by proxy without ever having met him in person might sound a little wild, but it works for her. HARD. Sure, they had to mentally work through the whole thing about his mom pretending to be him when emailing with Nettie, but in the end it all worked out.

A killer storm, JUST ONE BED, a lot of smolder, and two people who found one another when they needed to most. *thumbs up*

My Eye Adored You

Date read: May 22, 2023
Kylie Marcus - Website | Amazon
Synopsis (Goodreads):
He may only have one eye, but it adores her … he just doesn’t know it yet.

Reece Spencer became a monster after a Halloween party gone wrong, but instead of letting it ruin his life, he dedicated his life to monsters. After selling his portion of a successful investment firm, he funded the creation of a college for monsters just outside the monstrous little town of Screaming Woods.

This is his life now, trying to help monsters live as normally as possible, and nothing could disrupt that except for one new student who sets his entire world off-kilter: Kamila Letreuc, his former business partner’s daughter.

The last time he saw her, she was a grieving seventeen-year-old, and now she’s blossomed into a gorgeous woman. He may only have one eye, but he can tell how beautiful she is. Too bad she’s off-limits.

When Kamila's father asks him to keep his eye on her, Reece makes a promise that soon becomes personal.

Now he's got an injured Kamila staying in his house, flouncing around in his clothing, and keeping his eye and hands off her is increasingly difficult—not to mention that someone is out to kill his gorgeous little half-dryad.
Thoughts on My Eye Adored You: You know, age gap romances aren't my usual thing, but when you're dealing with a monster who doesn't really age I guess you gotta go with it. That said, Reece is technically Kamila's father's age, his physical aging just got slightly derailed by some Frankenpunch. BUT...Kamila had also been crushing on him since her early teens. So they actually work out pretty well together.

Probably more of an issue than the age gap is the fact that Reece is the Dean (or whatever it is he is, I guess) of the college Kamila is going to. Seeing as how there's no board he answers to, that could be problematic.

But it's not, really. Because monsters have to go after their special someone when they find them. And Kamila and Reece are definitely the ones for each other. It takes a little nudging on Kamila's part and an attack that leaves Reece realizing he could have lost her to REALLY get things going, but these two got where they needed to be.
