Synopsis (Goodreads):
I’m Val Thorvald, and I’m an assassin.

When magical bad guys hurt people, I take care of them. Permanently.

This doesn’t make me popular with the rest of the magical community—as you can tell from the numerous break-ins and assassination attempts I’ve endured over the years. But thanks to my half-elven blood, a powerful sword named Chopper, and a telepathic tiger with an attitude, I’ve always been able to handle my problems with aplomb. Maybe some cursing and swearing, too, but definitely aplomb.

That changes when my boss is afflicted with a mysterious disease, a government agent starts investigating me, and a godforsaken dragon shows up in the middle of my latest job.

I’ve taken down vampires, zombies, and ogres, but dragons are way, way more powerful. And it doesn’t look like this one is going to like me.

Worse than that, he wants to use his magic to compel me to do his bidding, as if I’m some weak-minded minion.

That’s not going to happen. I’d die before being some dragon’s slave.

But if I can’t figure out a way to avoid him, save my boss, and get rid of the government spook, I’m screwed. Or dead. Or screwed and dead. And that’s never comfortable.
Thoughts on Sinister Magic: Oh, man. Val is...well, she's sort of a trouble magnet when it comes to magical shenanigans. Or maybe she's just chaos walking to the magical community. Regardless, she's a shoot-first, ask-questions-later type of lady when we first meet her. She's also not beloved among the magical creatures running around the Pacific Northwest.

Probably because of her shoot first mentality. Huh. Who knew?

Anywho. Val is doing her thing when a dragon drops into her midst and suddenly she's got a whole lot more on her plate than just magical critters who sometimes kill humans. Because Zav is arrogant and doesn't think much of humans and doesn't much care if he's getting in Val's way when it comes to her job.

He also threw her Jeep into a tree during their first meeting which did not make Val gush with adoration.

But...buuuuuut...he's not a total lost cause. Zav might be arrogant and all that other stuff, but he also has a keen sense of justice. He's also not above using a local to draw out the bad guys. Which isn't so great for Val since she keeps getting dangled as bait for the people Zav's after.

Good times. Good times.

Fun and a little dangerous with a whole lot of sword swinging and bullets flying. Plus, you know, there's a dragon who isn't sure what to make of the half-elf who does NOT show him the respect he thinks he's owed as a dragon. Heh. Like I said, good times.
